The Veilguard's Necropolis Quests Are A Breath Of Fresh Air

No sprawling fantasy RPG is complete without a plethora of side quests for players to discover – and Dragon Age: The Veilguard is no exception. Operating out of their Fade-based hub, the Lighthouse, players can travel across Thedas via a network of eluvians, visiting the magically advanced Minrathous, the blighted Hossberg Wetlands, and more. One location in Dragon Age: The Veilguard is particularly notable for its uniquely structured side quests: the Necropolis Halls, home to the Mourn Watchers and their generally friendly – but sometimes quite mischievous and even dangerous – hordes of the dead.




The Mourn Watch faction is responsible for keeping the dead calm and at rest through their rituals, as well as dealing with undead and demon-related issues across Thedas. A player who chooses to help out the Mourn Watch by completing their side quests will be sent on a challenging and satisfying journey across many of the game’s other locations – and might even earn the approval of the Mourn Watch-aligned companion, the gentlemanly necromancer Emmrich, in the process.

Players begin by unlocking a previously sealed vault in the Necropolis Halls via the side quest “Restless Spirits.” Once the vault is open, it frees the Formless One – an ancient demon who the Mourn Watchers were keeping in the vault for a very good reason. The players are then given “Pinnacle of its Kind,” a multistep quest involving hunting down the Formless One as it takes on various shapes in locations throughout Thedas.

Three versions of the Formless One are fought in Arlathan Forest, the Hossberg Wetlands, and the Dock Town district of Minrathous. Each is a distinct and unique fight with the foe drawing from a range of different elemental abilities – utilizing cold, fire, electric, and necrotic damage – each time. Once all three forms are taken down, it’s time for the final showdown back in the Necropolis Halls.

For its final form, the Formless One possesses none other than a High Dragon, a beast veteran Dragon Age players know to dread. It’s a challenging fight against a highly mobile foe who will take to the air, breathe lightning, and send hordes of its undead allies against the player. But defeating it lets the player loot a literal dragon’s hoard of treasure; running around the massive vault to claim each pile of spoils is one of Veilguard‘s most satisfying moments.


Hauntings Is A Hilarious And Compelling Journey Around The World

The other major side quest in the Necropolis Halls are the Hauntings, which are accepted by talking to the necromancers Myrna and Vorgoth in the Hollow Belfry. Each Haunting requires the player to travel to a different location and defeat a unique undead or demonic boss, who has been freed by the gods and must be put to rest. These include:

  • Hauntings: Deathly Curiosity – Placate Curiosity-turned-Malice in a Venatori-infested vault.
  • Hauntings: Restless Dreams – Confront the concept of sleeplessness in Arlathan Forest.
  • Hauntings: From Beyond – Grant an undead Mourn Watcher their final rest.
  • Hauntings: Shadows of Fortune – Take down a literal Skeleton Crew in a rollicking Crossroads brawl.
  • Hauntings: Feeling Scared? – Face the embodiment of fear in the Hossberg Wetlands.
  • Hauntings: Deadly Playtime – Stop Death itself from stalking the streets of Minrathous.


Despite being a long series of similar quests, each Haunting manages to feel unique. The manic hijinks of the Skeleton Crew are genuinely funny, while the macabre, fear-eating Scarecrow is like something out of a horror movie. And concluding the Mourn Watch’s primary series of quests by facing Death itself is a moment of pure triumph for Veilguard. The Necropolis Halls may initially seem like a forbidding, unsettling location – but there are brilliant side quests just waiting for players brave enough to explore.
