Resident Evil Director is Adapting a Classic Horror Game for the Big Screen

Key Takeaways

  • The House of the Dead is being adapted into a movie by Resident Evil director Paul W.S. Anderson.
  • Previous adaptations of the classic game were box-office bombs, but this new film aims to win back fans.
  • Scheduled for production in 2025, the movie promises an action-packed and terrifying experience for zombie fans.

Delighting fright-flick fanatics and zombie gamers everywhere, a new The House of the Dead movie is being adapted and is in the works with Resident Evil‘s Paul W.S. Anderson set to write and direct. Released by Sega in 1997, The House of the Dead was one of the most popular games to be seen in arcades across the globe, as people, young and old, picked up a light gun in a mission to clear hordes of zombies over countless levels. Along with the popularity of Resident Evil, House of the Dead is credited with popularizing zombie video games, further leading to a massive boom in the appeal of zombie films, especially during the 2000s.

This isn’t the first time, however, that The House of the Dead has received an adaptation. Just over 20 years ago, German filmmaker, Uwe Boll, turned the classic game into a movie but, unfortunately, the film wasn’t a success among its dedicated audience and was regarded as a box-office bomb, making only $42 million worldwide against a budget of $12 million. Again, a second House of the Dead film, directed by Michael Hurst, was also poorly received. Now, in a bid to win back its moviegoing fans it once lost to two unsuccessful adaptations and give one of the best horror games a fair shake, an action-packed feature based on the legacy Sega franchise is making its way to the big screen.

What Are The Best Horror Movie Kills Of All Time?

As much as the formula may have gone stale for some, the Final Destination series really does feature some of the most ridiculous and gut-wrenching kills in all Horror – kills that frankly make the rest of the slow buildup worth it. If I had to put my money on one franchise that has the best kills on average I’d say Final Destination generally hits above par, even though some of the in-between story and some of the kills are a bit much, or a bit uninteresting or un-thought-out.

House of the Dead Is Getting a Film Adaptation by Resident Evil Director

As reported by Deadline, Paul W.S Anderson, who directed Event Horizon, Alien vs. Predator, and the Resident Evil film franchise, is set to adapt a House of the Dead movie of his own. The film will be produced alongside Anderson’s longtime collaborator Jeremy Bolt and is set to follow the plot of the third game in the series. Others that are confirmed to be working on the adaptation are Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg and Dan Jevons, with Sega’s Toru Nakahara, who worked on various Sonic the Hedgehog adaptations, including the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and the Knuckles TV show, serving as an executive producer.

Along with the announcement, a bunch of concept art images were released by Sega to the outlet that showed off a horde of terrifying zombies and a giant demon-looking creature wielding a weapon that seriously doesn’t look like anyone should mess around with it. Going by the pictures alone, there’s a good chance that this House of the Dead adaptation might be the scariest and best zombie movie to have been released in quite a few years.

The House of the Dead movie is set to begin production sometime in mid-to-late 2025 but, as yet, the adaptation does not have an official synopsis or cast list line-up. Here’s hoping the House of the Dead adaptation can rectify its past mistakes and also take its storyline, whatever it may be, to greater heights without falling victim to predictable horror movie tropes.
