Pokemon TCG Pocket hasn’t even been out a week and so many of us are playing that we’ve already discovered quite a bit about the game that hasn’t been publicly revealed by The Pokemon Company. However, between genuine discoveries and underhanded methods players are using to ensure they get the cards they want, it’s becoming increasingly more difficult to discern what’s true and what’s just an urban myth.
The latest Pokemon Pocket tactic doing the rounds is screen recording the Wonder Pick shuffle animation and then watching it back in slow motion in an attempt to keep track of the card you’d like the most. The first time I made a Wonder Pick I tried to keep track of the card I wanted but naturally, due to the speed at which the game shuffles the cards, it’s impossible to keep your eyes on the one you’re after.

It occurred to someone to screen record that process and then leave the app to watch the video back in slow motion. Since it’s then possible to watch the cards being shuffled frame by frame, in theory, you should be able to tell the new positions of all five cards. Quite a few players have been sharing clips of the method in action, claiming it really works.

The consensus on social media appears to be that the method works and that quite a few who have tried it have wound up getting the card that they wanted. However, others aren’t so sure, and after having tried it myself, I fall into that category. My trial run of the potential Wonder Pick hack ended with me not getting the card I expected, but in defense of those who believe the method is legitimate, even when slowed right down, the cards are hard to track.
After the cards have whizzed around the screen, they’re stacked up before being placed in a random order on the screen. The speed at which that happens, even when watching frame by frame, is hard to track. Players who don’t believe you can track your cards when Wonder Picking claim that when face down, the cards return to the spots at which they started and whether you think you’ve successfully kept your eye on the card you want or not, it doesn’t make a difference.
Much like the other urban myths to have come out of Pokemon Pocket’s first week, even if I were to provide you with hard evidence that the slow-mo method doesn’t work, you’re still going to keep using it if it has worked for you in the past. I bet many of you are still exclusively opening crinkled and bent packs believing that’s where the best cards are even though evidence was shared earlier this week seemingly proving the cards in your pack are determined before you reach the carousel screen.
