Japan is no stranger to strange collaborations, whether it be unique anime concepts, or partnerships with unexpected brands. That is exactly what is happening right now, as a new collaboration has been unveiled between two big names that could not be more different. The first is the dark, supernatural anime Jujutsu Kaisen. The second is none other than the famous brand behind characters like Hello Kitty, Gudetama, and Cinnamoroll, Sanrio.
This special new collection went on sale on Halloween, with each of the leading characters from Jujutsu Kaisen paired with a specific Sanrio character or two. The collaboration includes exclusive new artwork of the partnership characters, and, of course, plenty of limited merchandise to buy. No specific special events have been announced at this time, and the goods are for sale both online and in stores in Japan now.

Jujutsu Kaisen x Sanrio Collaboration
How an Unexpected Partnership Works
When you think about the dark, violent animeJujutsu Kaisen, the last thing you are likely to picture is Hello Kitty and her adorable friends. Yet somehow, the collaboration between this supernatural anime and the company behind some of the cutest characters in the world just works. The artwork that was created for the collaboration uses a muted color scheme to balance out the dark tones of Jujutsu Kaisen with Sanrio’s usual bright colors. The character designs are also all done in a cute, chibi style rather than the anime’s usual character designs, which also helps the collaboration make sense.
In the Jujutsu Kaisen and Sanrio special collection, each of the main characters from the anime has been paired with one (or more) of Sanrio’s famous characters. In total, 10 Jujutsu Kaisen characters were used, along with 12 Sanrio characters. The pairings are:
- Yuta Itadori with Pochacco
- Sakuna with Hello Kitty
- Satoru Gojo and Cinnamoroll
- Megumi Fushiguro with Bad Badtz-Mar
- Mahito with the Little Twin Stars, Kiki and Lala
- Suguru Geto with Lloromannic, Berry and Cherry
- Nobara Kugisaki with My Melody
- Aoi Todo with Bonbonribbon
- Kento Nanami with Pompompurin
- Choso with Minna no Tabo
There has been no explanation given for why each of the character pairings was made, which leaves fans to speculate about exactly how the choices were made. Some have matching hairstyles, like Fushiguro and Bad Badtz-Mar, or similar hair colors, like Mahito and Kiki. Others are more up for your interpretation of why they were paired together.
