The Sims 4: Life and Death expansion pack centers around the profound journey of a soul, both in life and after passing, offering players a deeper experience of living, dying, and existing as a ghost. While ghosts have been part of the game since the base release, Life and Death transforms their experience by granting them unique powers and interactions on par with other occult Sims, like vampires and spellcasters. While ghosts can even keep some of the powers from their occult after passing, the Ghost Mastery that any Sim will get after dying is rather unique – and can be used for both good and evil, or anything in between.

With the Sims 4: Life & Death expansion, players can finally give their Sims a more meaningful goodbye.
The introduction of Ghost Mastery tree also opens up some new opportunities for ghosts beyond other occults, which is definitely worth exploring. While ultimately, Sims should aim to increase their Ghost Mastery to unlock additional benefits, at least while doing so, they will be able to occasionally obtain Fear and Goodwill Essence, which can be a passive income for Ghost Sims.
How to Obtain Fear and Goodwill Essences?
The Ghost Mastery tree, accessible through the Simology panel, allows players to track their unlockable abilities as they perform actions from the Ghost Mastery pie menu, whether on themselves, other Sims, or even objects. This menu is divided into three sections: Evil abilities, Neutral abilities, and Good abilities. While Neutral abilities do not yield any essence, Evil abilities generate Fear Essence, and Good abilities produce Goodwill Essence. Typically, higher-level ghost abilities will yield more of their respective essence compared to lower-level ones. As such, players should focus on the Ghost Pie menu and choose either Chaos or Scare abilities to generate Fear Essence, while Comfort or Helpful abilities will generate Goodwill Essence.
Both essences will automatically appear in the ghost Sim’s inventory, combined into a single section for Fear and Goodwill Essence, and can stack over 99 times.
If Sims unlock the “Fear the Night” ability in the Neutral section of the Ghost Mastery tree, they will gain access to more intense actions that generate additional Fear Essence during nighttime. This ability can be particularly useful for players aiming to unlock the “Otherworldly Curse” ability in the Evil section, as it allows them to maximize their essence collection while pursuing more sinister powers.
How to Use Fear and Goodwill Essences?
The primary purpose of these essences is to generate some extra Simoleons, as they can be sold to the Mysterious Merchant in Ravenwood. Each essence sells for 5 Simoleons, which means it isn’t the most lucrative activity if players are specifically looking to make money—activities like painting yield significantly higher returns in a shorter timeframe, especially when the skill is leveled up. However, as players engage in various ghost mastery actions to level up their ghost’s abilities, the collection of Fear and Goodwill Essences will naturally accumulate over time. This makes it a nice bonus, allowing players to profit while enjoying the unique gameplay mechanics introduced in the Life and Death expansion.
