Elon Musk Isn't Actually One Of The World's Top 20 Diablo 4 Players

Key Takeaways

  • Elon Musk recently claimed to be one of the world’s top 20 Diablo 4 players, though he may be stretching the truth a little.
  • Musk is in the top 20 players on a leaderboard on Helltide.com, though it includes less than 1,000 players on it, which is less than 6 percent of the game’s latest 24 hour player count on Steam.
  • Helltide.com’s co-owner supports Musk’s claim, but acknowledges the inability to verify runs not recorded or shared.

Elon Musk is a gamer. That much is true, as the Twitter CEO (not calling it X) has gone on record multiple times explaining how much he loves video games, and has waded into the politics surrounding various games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, albeit usually on the wrong side. He’s also fairly well known in gaming circles for having an atrocious Elden Ring build, so we can safely assume he plays and enjoys video games.

He doesn’t have a reputation for being very good at them though, which is why Musk’s recent claim that he’s actually one of the top 20 best Diablo 4 players in the world raised more than a few eyebrows. Musk made this declaration during an episode of the Joe Rogan podcast earlier this week, claiming that he’s in the top 20 on a leaderboard along with just one other American. Sounds pretty good, until you actually dive in and check for yourself.

There and back to hell again.

First pointed out by TheVerge, Musk’s claims start to fall apart as soon as you actually find the leaderboard he’s referring to. To his credit, Musk is actually in the top 20 players on a leaderboard on a website called Helltides.com, which can be used to log completion times for a dungeon called The Pit. This is a special endgame dungeon that challenges players to beat it in 15 minutes, with shorter times resulting in better rewards.

According to this leaderboard, Musk is currently placed at number 20, with a run of 2 minutes and 45 seconds. That’s pretty impressive, and proof that Musk isn’t simply mashing buttons and sprinting to the final boss and finish line, but the narrative comes into question when you realize that there’s less than a thousand people on that list, which is less than 6 percent of the game’s most recent 24 hour peak player count on Steam alone.

To make matters worse, these leaderboards aren’t even official and require users to submit their own recorded runs. So, while it’s true that Musk is in the top 20 players on a leaderboard, there’s absolutely no evidence that Musk is one of the top 20 Diablo 4 players in the entire world, and he’d never be able to claim so until an official leaderboard with every player on it were made. There’s also Helltide.com’s hardcore Pit leader board to consider too, which Musk isn’t even placed on.

Helltide.com’s co-owner has come out and said he believes Musk is a top 20 player, though he also admits “there’s no way for us to know about Pit runs that aren’t recorded and shared”. It’s just very strange to claim that you’re one of the best Diablo 4 players in the entire world, within a fanbase of literal millions, with the only evidence of that claim being a single leaderboard made up of a minuscule percentage of the game’s player base.
