Key Takeaways
- Varric and Solas’ inaudible argument in Dragon Age: The Veilguard has been cleaned up by fans.
- Varric was unable to convince Solas that his plan was wrong, but Solas wasn’t entirely unconvinced either.
- That pillar has a lot to answer for.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard immediately tugs on the heartstrings of long-time fans by pitting Varric and Solas, two beloved characters against each other. Whether you’re a Dread Wolf apologist or you simply hate to see Varric sad, the pair’s argument during the game’s opening is sure to have made your heart hurt.
Those who have played The Veilguard may remember the pair arguing inaudibly in the background while Rook and one of Neve and Harding, depending on the player’s choice, enact a plan to disrupt Solas’ ritual by knocking over a pillar. Years of planning and scheming only to be undone by faulty construction… you hate to see it.
Chuckles and the Dwarf
The distorted audio of this argument wasn’t intended to be fully heard, rather it was meant to show the player that Varric was actively distracting Solas while Rook pulled off their scheme. However, a fan on Twitter, Thedas Wolves, has cleaned up the audio of the argument, allowing us to hear exactly what the two were bickering about. The transcript of the conversation can be read below.
Varric: So, how is this time going to work out for the better? Can you tell me that?
Solas: I understand your hesitance, but what I do now must be done, despite it being past your comprehension.
Varric: I’m not saying you’re evil, but if you truly believed what you were doing, you’d be able to give me a straight answer.
Solas: You would rather cast aspersions aside than admit that this is mine to solve.
Varric: C’mon Chuckles, who are you trying to convince here? Me or yourself?
Ultimately, Solas is unconvinced and ends up wounding Varric when the latter tries to restrain him physically. Rook’s hare-brained scheme works, but inadvertently releases two ancient and evil gods into Thedas. The blood spilt by Rook at the ritual site allows him to commune with Solas who is trapped in the Fade, offering a glimpse into the psyche of Fen’Harel.
Fans of the series have mixed feelings about BioWare’s shift away from Solas as a primary antagonist, especially given the set-up provided by Dragon Age Inquisition’s expansion Trespasser. However, it’s also nice that we’re able to talk to Solas, a character from Inquisition that many players were big fans of.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the long-awaited fourth game in the fantasy RPG series from BioWare formerly known as Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. A direct sequel to Inquisition, it focuses on red lyrium and Solas, the aforementioned Dread Wolf.
