Dexter: Original Sin is preparing for its debut on Paramount+ with Showtime on December 13, 2024. To the delight of many fans, Dempsey confirmed that humor would be playing a very big part in the new series. Dexter: New Blood had tinges of humor, but it was much darker than the original Dexter series, especially with the change of location to the cold and dreary upstate New York setting.

Original Sin will return to the iconic location of Miami, and it’ll see Patrick Gibson take on the iconic role of a much younger and inexperienced Dexter Morgan as he navigates an internship in the forensic department at Miami Metro Homicide. Patrick Dempsey has had a long and varied career in Hollywood, but his new role as Miami Metro chief, Aaron Spencer in Dexter: Original Sin, looks like it could be his best yet. Dempsey has recently been on the promotional trail for the new prequel series and has revealed some very exciting details about what fans can expect when the show hits television screens next month. In an interview with Haute Living, he said:

Tonally, we’re very similar to the original. There’s a darkness to it, but at the same time, a sort of gallows humor as well and more humor than you might expect. Plus, all of the original characters are revisited at the very beginning, and I think the way we get into it will be very satisfying for hardcore fans.

The fact that Original Sin will feature more humor than the first Dexter series will be pleasing to a lot of fans.Dexter was always funny, but as the stakes got higher as the show progressed, the humor was replaced by extreme darkness. New Blood had its moments of humor, but it mostly felt like a post-apocalyptic existence for Dexter, with the constant haunting of his dead sister, Debra, and the regrets over his neglect of his teenage son, Harrison. Original Sin will take Dexter back to where it all started in Miami. The 90s setting sounds like it will give the prequel a lighter tone, while still displaying the usual darkness fans expect.

What Did Dempsey Say About His Upcoming Role In The Dexter Spin-Off?

In addition to Dempsey’s revelations about the added humor in Original Sin, he also gave more details about what to expect from his new character in the same interview:

Aaron oversees all investigations; that’s my role. I’ve had a long-standing relationship with Dexter’s father, Harry, a homicide detective that goes back to the very beginning of my career; we do flashbacks from the 1970s up until present day, which is 1991. I’ve known Dexter since he was a baby.

It’ll be very interesting to see the relationship between Dempsey’s Aaron Spencer and Harry Morgan, who will be played by Christian Slater in the prequel. Original Sin marks the first time the pair have worked together since Mobsters in 1991. Note the year this movie came out: the same year Original Sin is set.

Christian-Slater and Patrick-Dempsey

Dempsey’s role as the Miami chief does mark a significant career change for the actor, who fans are used to seeing as Dr Derek ‘McDreamy’ Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy:

I don’t think I’ve ever played a detective before, plus the show itself has so much more edge than what I’ve done in the past,

Dempsey is an actor whose career has improved as the years have gone on, with the 58-year-old also carving out his own niche in the horror genre, with his recent role in Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving. It’s an exciting prospect to see Dempsey take on the role of a detective for the first time in his career, and fans will be eager to see how he interacts with a young Dexter Morgan. No mention was ever made of Aaron Spencer in the original series, so it’ll be interesting to learn more about the character and his relationship with the Morgan family.
