The Xbox Series X is now four years old and continues to shine as the fastest and most powerful Xbox ever developed, with twice the GPU power of the Xbox One X before it. Now, likely in an effort to showcase Microsoft’s commitment to aesthetics and premium consoles, the company has released the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition as of October 15, 2024.
While the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition’s name might imply a mere cosmetic upgrade, the console is also more powerful thanks to a larger SSD. As such, anyone looking to upgrade their Xbox Series X or purchase one for the first time may need to look no further than the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition.

The Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition Has a Brand-New Look to Complement Its Larger SSD
The most useful feature of the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition is arguably its 2TB SSD, as players will benefit from that aspect of the console more than its unique appearance. Apart from offering more space for players to store their games on than the standard Series X’s 1TB SSD is capable of, a larger SSD also means the console should theoretically be able to access data faster, which can potentially allow more fluid menu navigation and more efficient multitasking. There have been ways for players to increase their Xbox Series X’s storage size in the past, but only by using a separate storage expansion card. Now, with the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition, players can have more built-in storage from the get-go.
From a structural standpoint, nothing has changed about the Xbox Series X with the Galaxy Black Special Edition. By and large, its exterior is still fundamentally the same, meaning players should be able to swap it in and out with a standard Xbox Series X without altering the rest of their setup in any way. However, this edition of the Series X does come with a brand-new skin on it, which features a smattering of green and white stars on a black canvas on three sides of the console’s body, the back excluded. The stars almost appear as though paint from a spray can was haphazardly flung onto the body, but they are simultaneously uniform in their composition, with varying degrees of opacity and size.
The back of the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition features the exact same options as the base model — a power cable port, an HDMI Out port, two USB ports, an Ethernet port, and a Storage Expansion slot. The circular stand at the base of the console is Xbox’s Velocity Green color, which one of the Series X’s Wireless Controllers has been available in since March 2023, as opposed to the standard black. Speaking of controllers, the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition has its own themed controller, which follows a similar color scheme to the console.
The ABXY buttons are all black, unlike the standard Series X controller. However, four dots indicating their normal colors rest in the middle of the buttons, each one adjacent to its usual counterpart. While the majority of the controller lacks the white and green stars of the console tower, the controller’s D-pad does feature the design. Finally, the back of the controller is painted in Velocity Green like the console’s base.
While the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition is still, at its core, the same console it has always been, the larger SSD and unique look might be well worth the investment for those looking to upgrade their Series X’s base storage and add to their room’s aesthetics in the process. With an SSD twice the size of the standard Xbox Series X and a galaxy of stars painted on its exterior, the Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition can make a distinctive addition to any gaming setup.
The Xbox Series X Galaxy Black Special Edition is currently available for purchase on Microsoft’s official website.
