Need more Black Ops 6 in your life? These games are the perfect squadmates to go along with it.

How does it stack up to the prior year’s game, though? There is a lot to discuss about 2023’s Modern Warfare 3 and how it fares against Black Ops 6. Though we won’t crown the winner in this introductory paragraph, the answer is probably obvious to anyone who played both.

Single-Player Campaign – Black Ops 6

It’s Longer, Has More Variety, And Has Better Writing

Modern Warfare 3 had a notoriously underwhelming campaign. It was billed as having open levels, and while this is true in a sense, it ultimately boiled down to levels taking place in large environments consisting of simple objectives. There was nothing to do in those open areas except accomplish the main objective. Black Ops 6 features a stunning amount of variety.

There are stealth missions, undercover operations, sandbox levels with multiple bonus objectives, and even a tribute to the populer Zombies mode. If you don’t like one element about a mission, you don’t have to suffer with it for long before the next mission offers a new mechanic.

Game Mode Variety – Modern Warfare 3

It Has More Than Just The Basics

Both games feature the standard modes you expect from the series. Modern Warfare 3 takes the slight edge in this department because it offers a wider variety of game modes. In addition to the standards, there is also War Mode, an interesting team mode where one team pushes through various objectives and the opposing team has to stop them.

It’s simple, but effectively done. During one phase of the map, the attacking team guides a tank through the map into the enemy base and the constant movement of the vehicle creates a dynamic battlefield with constant changes. Black Ops 6 lacks a standout game mode, but maybe a future season will change this.

6

Omnimovement – Black Ops 6

Move However You Want, Whenever You Want

Black Ops 6 introduces a more fluid and diverse movement mechanic, dubbed Omnimovement. You can sprint in any direction, more easily dive anywhich way you want, and freely aim while prone after a dive. It is subtle enough to do without realizing it.

After playing with this new mechanic, it is hard to imagine going back to the older style of movement. The lack of something similar in innovation in Modern Warfare 3 represents a bigger complaint about the game. It really doesn’t add anything new to Call of Duty.

Weapon Variety – Modern Warfare 3

It’s Helped By Having Guns From Modern Warfare 2

Despite all the complaints, Modern Warfare 3 still comes packed with content. Just look at the massive amount of weaponry available to you in both the single-player and multiplayer modes. At launch the game presented 114 weapons at your disposal, with more added on in the future seasons.

Black Ops 6 features just 33 weapons by comparison. It should be noted that Modern Warfare 3’s weapon list also includes much of the arsenal from 2022’s Modern Warfare 2, giving it the leg up. Regardless of where it comes from, more weapons are still more weapons.

4

Originality And New Content – Black Ops 6

Despite Taking Place In The Past, It Isn’t A Nostalgia Trip

The Black Ops games started three years after the Modern Warfare series. Since 2007, Modern Warfare has seen an original trilogy and a reboot trilogy. The latter plays heavily on fans’ nostalgia. Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer suite, for example, is basically a remastered version of the 2009 Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer, featuring all of the old maps.

Black Ops deserves praise for still pushing forward in both multiplayer and single-player. Old characters like Frank Woods are still there and a Nuketown playlist pleases old fans, but they always add a lot of new content.

Armory Unlocks – Modern Warfare 3

Black Ops 6’s multiplayer is a return to basics in some ways, streamlining equipment and the level progression to how it used to work in the older entries. This is perfectly fine, but Modern Warfare 3 did have some interesting methods of progression.

You should unlock these items in the Armory first in Modern Warfare 3.

Armory Unlocks were a creative, non-linear method of progression. It gave you a choice in what weapons, attachments, and equipment you would get first. You selected what armory unlock you wanted, and then daily challenges would contribute to the unlock. It is simple but gives you more agency in the progression.

2

Zombies Mode – Black Ops 6

Zombies Doesn’t Need To Go Open-World

Modern Warfare 3 included a Zombies mode. It took place in an open-world map where you freely ran around and accomplished objectives before exfiltrating. It’s a neat idea on paper, but it robs the mode of its trademark tension, difficulty, and haphazard combat.

Black Ops 6 returns to a more traditional Zombies mode with waves and Easter eggs you slowly figure out through exploration. Zombies are tough and later waves flood the map with the undead, bringing back what players love about the mode.

Winner: Black Ops 6

Not Just Because It’s Newer

Modern Warfare 3 was a huge letdown for fans, but that doesn’t mean it lacks any saving graces. When compared to Black Ops 6, though, it’s clear Black Ops 6 is a huge improvement. The single-player is more interesting, it adds omnimovement to the gameplay, and the Zombies mode brings back what people adored about it in the first place.

At least Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer is still that classic, fast-paced Call of Duty gunplay that hasn’t grown old. If you like those maps, there is still a reason to boot up the 2023 title. For everything else, Black Ops 6 has the upper hand.
