Less than a month after it launched, Amazon Games has nerfed the XP rewards of New World Aeternum’s new PvP zone, The Cursed Mists. The area arrived as part of the MMO’s recent revamp, and it presents players with an extraction-like gameplay loop with unique loot and XP available for playing. Amazon says the zone was giving players “more PvP experience than intended,” with the rewards now brought back down.
New World Aeternum was a gargantuan relaunch for what once was one of the biggest MMOs around. The Aeternum version of Amazon’s game absorbed the first, giving it a more action RPG focus alongside a new storytelling approach, combat improvements, a ten-player raid, and a whole lot more.
Amazon Games also added The Cursed Mists, a free-for-all PvP zone, to New World Aeternum as a part of the recent revamp. The Cursed Mists is meant to be always available, unlike other scheduled events or instances. You can find resources and extract them, sneak around to get the drop on unsuspecting players, and loot everything you come across. New World Aeternum’s gear score cap is also now 725, and Amazon says The Cursed Mists are one of just three ways to get 700-plus gear.
New World Aeternum update 1.1.2 makes a key change to The Cursed Mists, however, and now you’ll get less XP while playing in it. Amazon says it “Fixed an issue that caused players to receive more PvP experience than intended in the Cursed Mists zone.”
Outside of the drop in XP, Cursed Mists is actually quite forgiving. If you die or voluntarily teleport out of the MMO’s PvP zone, you keep 50% of your cursed doubloons and harvested resources. You then spawn outside of the PvP zone itself, but, depending on how you died, you can potentially head back in to grab what you dropped.
As for the future of the PvP zone, Amazon had this to say ahead of Aeternum’s launch: “This free-for-all PvP zone is a bit of an experiment, so based on how players engage with the experience, we’ll see how it evolves going forward. Right now, players can look forward to new rewards after release. We’ll also keep an eye on the Cursed Mists to tune for what players adore most.”
The Cursed Mists XP nerf isn’t all that’s changed in New World Aeternum, as Amazon Games’ full patch notes can be found here. Some pretty nasty bugs have been squashed, alongside several changes to rendering tech.
