The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is the Star Wars franchise’s next feature film. A recent report suggested the movie wrapped filming, but it may have overstated the situation.

The Mandalorian was originally going to continue with a fourth season on Disney Plus. Jon Favreau finished writing The Mandalorian season 4, but the series was delayed due to the Writers’ and Actors’ strikes of 2023. During that tumultuous period, Lucasfilm opted to move forward with The Mandalorian and Grogu movie instead. Production started in August 2024 with a May 2026 release date in sight.

A report claimed The Mandalorian and Grogu movie wrapped filming in October 2024. However, The Bespin Bulletin reports that one of its sources said The Mandalorian and Grogu filming could last until December, while a second source less precisely said it could continue for “nearly two months.” The online publication noted that their sources mentioned many cast members had finished working on the film, potentially explaining why some believe that production wrapped, and speculated that the principal photography may be complete but there’s still filming to be done. The Bespin Bulletin added that one source said The Mandalorian and Grogu reshoots were planned–standard practice–but it’s unclear if these reshoots are what’s being worked on until December.

The Bespin Bulletin also pointed to curious posts by The Mandalorian stunt performer Lateef Crowder. On Instagram, Crowder shared stories that showed him driving with The Mandalorian stickers and the words “Bom dia” added to the footage. The online publication wonders if this was Crowder’s way of implying The Mandalorian and Grogu filming was ongoing, though the stunt performer did not comment on this one way or the other. Regardless, as far as The Bespin Bulletin is concerned, The Mandalorian and Grogu is still a few weeks away from fully wrapping.

The Mandalorian and Grogu movie is still on track to meet its May 2026 release date. At this point, even getting production started is a victory for the Star Wars franchise. Several Star Wars film and television projects have failed to get off the ground, even after many were announced at events like Star Wars Celebration. The most recent example is Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order Star Wars movie, which reportedly lost its writer and isn’t expected to start filming until 2025, despite reports from earlier this year claiming production could begin in 2024.

It’s been nearly 5 years since a Star Wars movie was released in theaters, and fans weren’t exactly impressed with The Rise of Skywalker. Fans have high expectations for The Mandalorian and Grogu, and perhaps Favreau and Dave Filoni are the right people to triumphantly bring the franchise back to the big screen.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 22, 2026.

The Mandalorian is set after the Empire’s fall and before the First Order’s emergence in the ever-growing Star Wars universe. The series follows the travails of a lone gunfighter named Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. Acting as the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian has become incredibly popular on Disney+, partly due to Mando’s relationship with Grogu, which the internet dubbed “Baby Yoda” upon his introduction in season 1.
