The Gathering Fans Are Upset With The Marvel Secret Lair Release

The Gathering Fans Are Upset With The Marvel Secret Lair Release

Key Takeaways

  • Magic: The Gathering’s Marvel Secret Lair drop was a disaster for pretty much everyone apart from Wizards of the Coast.
  • Things sold out quickly, fans were stuck in queues, and many had items in their cart taken away after lengthy waits.
  • It has once again led to calls from fans for the return of the print-to-demand system that was in place before, with many preferring lenghty shipping times over the current system.

Magic: The Gathering released its highly anticipated Marvel Secret lair earlier today, but unless you were either quick on the draw or extremely lucky, chances are you were left empty-handed or without the products you wanted. Technical issues were rampant shortly after the Secret Lair dropped, and those that did manage to get through were greeted with hour-long wait times that wouldn’t even guarantee products to buy at the end.

In fact, it got so bad that the special Arcane Signet promo cards that customers would get if they spent over $200 were selling out while people were still in queues, with even more stock vanishing while people were stuck waiting to actually buy something. It’s suffice to say the whole affair was a bit of a disaster for everyone besides Wizards of the Coast, and fans have been letting their frustrations out on social media.

Magic: The Gathering Fans Are Angry With Wizards Of The Coast’s Marvel Secret Lair Drop

We’ll start with the many, many posts on the MTG subreddit about the whole fiasco, including one from Reddit user Chiksahlube, who complained about having to wait in a queue more than two and a half hours just to buy something from an online retailer. Another user under this post describes their situation, in which they filled their cart with the products they wanted to buy, and had to wait in a three and a half hour queue, only for their cart to have been emptied at the end.

Magic: The Gathering’s Marvel Secret Lair Superdrop is littered with a bevy of scintillating reprints. But which ones are the best?

Other players decided that the wait didn’t justify the means, and bailed mid-way through the queue out of frustration, such as Twitter user WachelReeks, who called the entire situation “dreadful” from Wizards of the Coast. There are plenty of other disgruntled fans in the replies too, featuring people who queued up for specific cards, only to find them sold out after their long wait.

Unsurprisingly, this backlash also has quite a lot of MTG fans calling for Wizards of the Coast to bring back print-to-demand for Secret Lairs, which used to be the case before the switch to this current system. For example, a Twitter user called SaffronOlive claimed shortly after the fiasco that Wizards needs “a better system for selling Secret Lairs”, claiming the scrapping of print-to-demand was “really bad for players”.

It’s the same story on Reddit too, with many on there claiming that they’d prefer long shipping times over the current system, with some even suggesting that a short purchase window would still give people the chance to purchase what they want without potentially overwhelming Wizards’ supply. In any case, from the Marvel Secret Lair, and other Secret Lairs in the past that have quickly sold out, it’s clear that fans aren’t happy with the way Wizards is operating at the moment.
