The Best Reprints In Foundation Jumpstart

Key Takeaways

  • Foundations Jumpstart features a mix of new and reprint cards, with new art for some reprints.
  • Popular cards like Crimson Wisps and Giada are more accessible with reprints in Foundations Jumpstart.
  • Key cards like Youthful Valkyrie and Adeline see much-anticipated reprints, making them more affordable for players.

Foundations Jumpstart is a supplemental set released alongside Magic: The Gathering’s main Foundations. Because creatures are for dorks.

Foundations Jumpstart mostly consists of reprints, with about 700 cards in the set, and only 56 of them are new to Magic. Some reprints feature new art for the cards, while others are seeing their first proper reprint in the game.

Crimson Wisps

Hasty Cantrip

Crimson Wisps isn’t the most exciting card. It simply gives a creature haste and turns it red while replacing itself in the hand since it draws you a card. While it appeared on The List, the reprint in Foundations Jumpstart is the first proper reprint of the card since its debut in 2008’s Shadowmoor set.

For being such a simple card, Crimson Wisps has a price of around $5 due to the low access to the card. Crimson Wisps is popular in spellslinger decks, as it acts as a one mana draw spell (or cantrip) that can potentially let a creature attack the turn it enters the battlefield.

Giada, Font Of Hope

Staple Of Angels

MTG Giada, Font of Hope Anime Art card with the art in the background.

Giada, Font of Hope is the staple face of Angel decks in every format. Not only does it act as a mana dork for Angels, but the Angels will enter with more +1/+1 counters the more of them you have on the battlefield. Giada has vigilance as well, letting it attack before tapping to add mana to cast Angels.

Angels are one of the most popular and plentiful creature types in all of Magic, making Giada generally have a slightly higher-than-average price tag. As such, the reprint in Foundations Jumpstart is welcome to make the card more accessible.

8

Youthful Valkyrie

Grow With Angels

Youthful Valkyrie appeared as an uncommon in 2021’s Kaldheim set, and despite its low rarity the card generally costs around $5. Youthful Valkyrie sees a much-welcomed reprint in Foundations Jumpstart (and in the main Foundations set) that will help bring the price down for those who want a copy.

Magic: The Gathering – 10 Best Black Tutors

Looking to get what you want when you want it in Magic: The Gathering? These black tutors are the best options if you’re rifling through your library.

Youthful Valkyrie slowly grows in stats whenever another Angel enters the battlefield. Its statline makes it a solid blocker early, and once you start flooding the battlefield with Angels, it becomes a formidable attacker as well, especially with other Angel support cards.

7

Adeline, Resplendent Cathar

Attack And Make Creatures

MTG Adeline, Resplendent Cathar card with the art in the background.

A staple in many mono white decks across multiple formats, Adeline, Resplendent Cathar is one of the best three-drops you can play in a creature deck. Adeline is a base 1/4 with vigilance, but in decks that flood the battlefield, the stats can grow very quickly. You don’t need to attack with Adeline for its effect to trigger either, just with any creature.

Despite Adeline having seen a few reprints, including in a March of the Machine Commander deck, the card still has a price tag over $6. With the reprint in Foundations Jumpstart, more players will have a chance to get their hands on the card with a special anime art treatment.

6

Dark Confidant

An Old Classic

MTG Dark Confidant card with the art in the background.

At one point, Dark Confidant was considered one of, if not the best black creature ever. While it certainly has competition for that title now, it is still a powerhouse of a card. It provides easy card advantage at the cost of losing life, a staple trait of black.

Dark Confidant has seen multiple reprints over the years, and the popularity of the card never quite wavered, leaving it with a price floating around $5 and up depending on the printing. The Foundations Jumpstart versions sees new art for the card, giving collectors and players alike a new version of the card to obtain.

5

Lathliss, Dragon Queen

Dragons For Dragons

MTG Lathliss, Dragon Queen card with the art in the background.

Lathliss, Dragon Queen is a staple in many Dragon decks as it turns any Dragon you play regardless of mana cost into a two for one, as it’ll create a 5/5 Dragon as well. Lathliss can pump all your Dragons rather easily as well, making it easier to close out games since Dragons often win through combat.

Due to the overwhelming popularity of Dragons, Lathliss usually costs about $5, and has been the face of the Dragon themes found in all the previous main Jumpstart sets. It returns in Foundations Jumpstart with new art for the first time (Secret Lair excluded).

4

Brimaz, King Of Oreskos

Tons Of Cats

MTG Brimaz, King of Oreskos card with the art in the background.

Brimaz, King of Oreskos rewards you for attacking or blocking with it by creating 1/1 Cat Solider tokens with vigilance. It’s good offensively, but especially good defensively since the token Brimaz creates blocks the same creature Brimaz is blocking to deal extra damage to it. Brimaz is especially strong in token decks and with cards that care about creatures entering the battlefield.

The Foundations Jumpstart reprint is the first time Brimaz has been properly reprinted, having only appeared on The List and the original printing in 2014’s Born of the Gods. The Foundations Jumpstart version features new art for the card as well.

3

Ancient Greenwarden

Lands, Lands, Lands

MTG Ancient Greenwarden card with the art in the background.

There are a ton of abilities and creatures with effects that will trigger when lands enter the battlefield. Ancient Greenwarden is a way to double up on those triggers. This effect alone would already be great, but the fact Ancient Greenwarden lets you also play lands from your graveyard while having solid stats makes it fantastic.

2

Vilis, Broker Of Blood

Turn Pain Into Cards

MTG Vilis, Broker of Blood card with the art in the background.

Vilis, Broker of Blood is one of the best ways to draw cards in black. Whenever life is lost, you draw that many cards. This includes when you take combat damage, so if you get hit for 15 damage with Vilis on the battlefield, you’ll be drawing 15 cards. You can also pay one black mana to weaken a creature and getting you a minimum of two cards.

Vilis, Broker of Blood has had very few printings. Prior to Foundations Jumpstart, the only way to get it was in Core Set 2020 and in the Game Night: Free-for-All product.

1

Kodama Of The West Tree

MTG Kodama of the West Tree card with the art in the background.

Kodama of the West Tree is a phenomenal support card in any deck that utilizes modified creatures, and with how broad modification is, includes many popular strategies and archetypes. Kodama helps you ramp by getting basic lands onto the battlefield and giving the modified creatures trample to make it easier for you to close out games.

Prior to Foundations Jumpstart, the only printing of Kodama of the West Tree was in 2022’s Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, with Foundations Jumpstart being the first reprint of the card. It’s a rather expensive card, so another way to obtain it is great and makes it a very welcomed reprint.
