It’s been a very rocky road for Risk of Rain 2 over recent months. Once regarded as one of the finest roguelikes out there, on a par with The Binding of Isaac, Dead Cells, Hades, and Noita, it’s definitely gone on to take a beating. Thankfully there’s still hope for it, as its new developer is attempting to right the good ship Seekers of the Storm and set sail for calmer seas. That brighter future just took a step closer, in the form of a roadmap that shows exactly how the game will come back from the brink over the coming months.
To be fair to Gearbox Software, the dev now in charge of Risk of Rain 2, it has put a lot of energy into repairing the damage done by the fairly disastrous release of the Seekers of the Storm expansion. Quite soon after launch, a big patch arrived that helped iron out many of the fundamental technical issues afflicting the title. The team has been busy ever since, with many bug fix updates also helping to make the roguelike game far more stable. That said, it’s been rather technical so far, but gameplay is under the microscope next.
Firstly, pretty much every item in the game is going to be altered in some way. Some will simply be tweaked or rebalanced, but others will receive far more wide-ranging alterations – in some cases going so far as to redesign the item entirely. Twisted and Gilded Elites will also be changed up, with the former being easier to dodge and the latter seeing a return of a deprecated gold-stealing mechanic, albeit in a “more interesting” form.
After that, fans can expect the Seekers of the Storm final boss to get reworked. There aren’t any specific details of what exactly will be updated just yet, but the dev’s goals are to make the fight fairer and clearer, stop the boss from attacking through solid objects, make its arena more logical to navigate and utilize in battle, put a stop to some extraneous damage sources, and overall rebalance the fight.
Lastly, it’s the turn of survivors. All three added in Seekers of the Storm will be updated, but it’s the Chef who’ll get the most drastic changes. Every single ability this character has will be analyzed, altered, and reworked to make Chef more powerful to play. The False Son will be made far more impactful – especially around the Lunar Spikes and Laser of the Father skills. Conversely the Seeker will receive far less attention as they’re already in a comparatively healthy state, though resurrection and tranquillity will both be looked at.
There’s plenty more in the works too so if you’d like to see what’s upcoming for Risk of Rain 2 Seekers of the Storm, you can get a peek at the full roadmap over on Steam.
