The original Resident Evil, from 1996, is one of my favorite ever games. Likewise, the first Metal Gear Solid, Doom from 1993, Deus Ex, and Fallout 1. We all have our beloved, acclaimed, almost-impervious top ten – a game has to be truly special to earn a seat in that pantheon. For me, 1000xResist is already one of those games. Although it only came out this year, it’s already become one of my all-time favorites, alongside all those inveterate, historical hits. If you’ve been busy so far this year with Helldivers 2, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree, and Balatro, now, as 2024 winds down, it’s time to give 1000xResist a try, especially considering it’s cheaper than ever.
We often categorize videogames by genre – it’s an RPG, an FPS, a strategy game – and these genres are defined by the games’ mechanics. This method of classification tells you something about a game, but it also works to exclude a would-be player’s understanding of what a game is narratively, aesthetically, or emotionally ‘about.’ I would rather live in a world where we say a game is a domestic drama, or a love story, or a revenge tale. It would make describing something like 1000xResist – which although it may borrow from a variety of mechanical genres, doesn’t fit into any of them – a lot easier.
Gigantic, god-like creatures called The Occupants arrive on present-day Earth and kill almost the entire human race with an incurable, terminal disease. Years later, the only survivor – the last person – is Iris, a young, Japanese-American schoolgirl who is inexplicably immune to The Occupants’ contagion. Gradually, Iris creates more and more clones of herself, and raises them to follow her own pseudo religion, with herself at the center as the deific ‘Allmother.’ You play as one of her clones.
I won’t go any further, except to say that 1000xResist is the best game I’ve played all year. It’s tragic, it’s funny, it’s humane, and it’s told with an enormous amount of energy and imagination. It’s a long time since I’ve had real feelings towards a videogame protagonist, but 1000xResist made me feel deeply about every member of its cast.
Right now, you can get 1000xResist for the historically low price of $15.99 / £13.40. One of the best PC games I’ve ever played, if you want to finish off 2024 with an experience that’s unlike anything you’ve played before, you can get 1000xResist right here.
