Is Pokemon TCG Pocket Pay to Win?
Current analysis indicates that although Pokemon TCG Pocket aims to offer a fair free-to-play experience, its pay-to-win aspects cannot be overlooked.
However, many players new to Pokemon TCG Pocket wonder how to obtain these Promo Cards since they don’t appear in regular booster packs. Additionally, the game does not list them or provide details on where, when, or how to get them. If you’re one of those players looking for more Promo Cards, you’re in luck because this detailed guide reveals everything you need to know about them.
Similar to the physical Pokemon TCG, Pokemon Pocket features promotional releases known as Promo Cards. These cards are typically obtained through non-traditional card-acquisition methods like events, limited-time rewards, or paid content. Most Promo Cards are identical to their base variants, but some rare ones may have unique stats or abilities.
Currently, the Pokedex in Pokemon Pocket includes 24 Promo Cards in the Promo-A category. Players can likely expect more of these cards in the future as additional expansions are introduced.
Currently, the only way to obtain Promo Packs is by participating in Pokemon Pocket’s limited-time events. There is no way to purchase these special packs. Right now, you can fight Lapras ex in its November Drop Event for a chance to win one Promo Pack after each victory.
The Promo-A Packs you win in the Lapras ex Event must be manually claimed. For this, you must head to the Gifts section—the gift box icon in the top-right corner of the home screen. You will have 29 days to claim and open these packs, or they will expire.
Pokemon TCG Pocket has 24 Promotional Cards in its Genetic Apex series. These cards include two unique variants of Pikachu, seven Trainer cards, as well as the rare artwork of the following cards: Mewtwo, Chansey, Meowth, Butterfree, Lapras ex, Clefairy, Mankey, Venusaur, Greninja, Haunter, Onix, Jigglypuff, Balbasaur, and Magnemie.

Except for Pikachu’s rare illustration, all 23 Promo Cards in Pocket can be obtained from free-to-play features. You generally have three methods for obtaining them: Events, missions, and tasks.
Complete the Advanced Training
After choosing the initial booster pack in Pocket and getting the introduction over with, you can start advanced training. For this, you need to go to the Battle Menu and click Guide. This will show a list of tasks to earn the seven Trainer Promo Cards: Potion, Pokedex, X Speed, Hand Scope, Red Card, Poke Ball, and Professor’s Research.
Participate In the Lapras ex’s Drop Event
Starting November 1, you can access the Solo Battle menu to challenge Lapras ex. Each time you defeat it, you have a chance to win a Promo-A Pack, which contains a single card that is guaranteed to be a Promo variant.
To battle Lapras ex, you’ll need event-exclusive tokens. By completing the special missions for each battle, you can earn Event Hourglasses, which help regenerate tokens. If you don’t have Hourglasses, you’ll have to wait 60 hours for your tokens to fully regenerate, receiving one token every 12 hours.
The Lapras ex’s Drop Event ends in November 18.
Pull Cards in the Chansey Pick Event
As part of the Wonder Pick Event in Pokemon Pocket, you can participate in Chansey Picks, which guarantee a Chansey or Meowth Promo card. These special Wonder Picks appear randomly and require two tokens to participate. Throughout the event, there will also be Bonus Picks that are free and include the same Promo cards.
Exchange Shop Tickets with Promo Cards
You can exchange your Shop Tickets with Trainer Promo Cards in the Shop. If you have purchased Pokemon Pocket’s Premium Pass, you can also exchange one Premium Ticket at the Shop to unlock Pikachu (009/P-A), which is one of the rarest Promotional Cards.
