Fortnite Players Warn People Not To Use Snoop Dogg Emote In Real Life

Fortnite somehow outdid itself once again at the weekend when it kicked off its Remix Season with an in-game concert that was simultaneously taking place live in Times Square. The music-themed season has brought the likes of Ice Spice and Juice WRLD to the island along with a ton of new cosmetics. However, some players have pointed out potential real-world ramifications one of those cosmetics might have.

Despite the litany of big-name rappers that were shown off during the Chapter 2 Remix trailer, the addition of Snoop Dogg to Fortnite was its focus. The D-O-Double-G is now a part of the Fortnite canon, as is an emote he’s brought along with him dubbed the Snoop Dogg Walk. Even though it’s a dance move the rapper has popularized, it’s an evolution of crip walking and those with a better knowledge of its history have been explaining why turning the dance move into a Fortnite emote might be a bad idea.

There is a list of dance moves and taunts that might not have originated in Fortnite but have been popularized by the game to the point that you’ve almost certainly seen them performed elsewhere in pop culture and maybe even in everyday life. Take The L, Orange Justice, and Flossing all spring to mind. Things you might not even realize are in Fortnite when you’ve seen them performed, and therein lies the potential problem with the addition of the Snoop Dogg Walk emote.

Hitting It In The Real World Might Get You In Trouble

Players have taken to Twitter not only to highlight that the Snoop Dogg Walk is a form of Crip walking, but that if someone who only knows it from Fortnite performs the move in the wrong place, they might land themselves in hot water.

It depends on the city and the territory, of course, but the insinuation is that if a member of the Bloods, the Crips’ rival gang, were to see you doing the Snoop Dogg Walk in their territory, it’s unlikely they’d give you time to explain you thought it was just something from a video game.

While there have been a lot of people questioning whether adding a Snoop Dogg Walk to Fortnite is a good idea, a few others have claimed that in 2024, performing the move in public isn’t going to get you in trouble no matter where you do it.

That said, there’s a long history behind the move, and some of it is pretty dark. MTV once banned music videos that included the Crip Walk, which included Snoop’s biggest hit Drop It Like Its Hot. Crips would also sometimes use the move as a signature after killing someone from a rival gang. That last note makes its addition to Fortnite seem particularly dark when the emote will be used by many right after they’ve eliminated someone.

Starting life as a tower defense game, Fortnite has become one of the biggest video games out there. Its battle royale mode dominates popular culture, featuring concerts by megastar musicians and crossovers with just about every brand imaginable, from Marvel to the NFL.
