COD Mobile has reached a historic milestone as Activision announced today that the FPS title had crossed 1 billion lifetime downloads worldwide. The game was released back on Oct. 1, 2019, and five years later continues to be a chart-topping shooter game on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
Just because the game has crossed 1 billion downloads doesn’t mean it has this many COD Mobile players. This just means the number of times the game has been downloaded by different accounts.

COD Mobile crosses 1 billion downloads
Only a handful of mobile games have been able to achieve this milestone. Some of the others which have done so are as follows:
- Subway Surfers
- Candy Crush Saga
- Free Fire
- Hill Climb Racing
- Ludo King
- Roblox
The game became an instant hit with its release in October 2019. There were several reasons for this. One of the main ones was that there were no leading FPS titles at the time. While games like Critical Ops and Guns of Boom did exist, they either weren’t as widely marketed or had too many microtransactions.
Additionally, COD Mobile featured nostalgia-inducing maps and modes such as Nuketown and Hijacked. This brought a lot of previous players of the Call of Duty franchise to test out the mobile game.
The next reason is the addition of a multiplayer as well as a BR mode to the game. When it was released, back in 2019, the BR genre was the talk of town (and still is) with Free Fire, PUBG Mobile, and Rules of Survival leading the charts. Therefore, to capitalize on this hype, the game has an exciting battle royale mode, which continues to be the mode of choice for many players.
Last but not least are the monthly seasons with content updates. Since its release, Activision has released a new season every month, with each of them bringing an update featuring new content like maps, modes, and weapons. It also brings a new battle pass giving players a constant influx of content and stuff to grind for.
COD Mobile is celebrating its 5th anniversary in Season 10, which is set to begin on Nov. 6.
