Bosch: Legacy – Looks Like The Jerry Edgar Spin-Off Might Happen

Key Takeaways

  • Bosch: Legacy season 3 on Prime Video in March 2025 will be the last to feature Harry Bosch’s solo stories.
  • The Jerry Edgar spin-off might not be entirely dead depending on the success of Ballard.
  • Fans can support Jerry Edgar’s return by signing the Save: Bosch Legacy petition, with the potential for interlinking stories in the Bosch universe.

Bosch: Legacy season 3 is heading to Prime Video in March 2025, but it’ll be the last time fans get to see Harry Bosch’s solo stories after Amazon canceled it back in September 2024. They followed this up by axing the planned Jerry Edgar spin-off, which was set to see Bosch’s longtime partner go undercover with the FBI in Haiti. However, author and executive producer, Michael Connelly recently opened up about the J Edgar spin-off, and revealed that it might not be totally dead in the water, but it’ll depend on a few different factors.

The Renee Ballard spin-off series will follow in the Fall of 2025, after her set-up at the end of Bosch: Legacy season 3, and it’s looking like any potential return of Jerry Edgar relies on the success of Ballard. The Bosch-verse appeared to be expanding when Amazon announced the Ballard and Jerry Edgar spin-offs in early 2023, but fans have seen these plans crushed by Amazon in the space of a few weeks, and lots of questions still need to be answered as to why this is the case.

Michael Connelly Has Revealed That Jerry Edgar’s Spin-Off Might Still Happen But It All Rests On The Success Of Ballard

Not only has Michael Connelly seemingly given his support to the Save: Bosch Legacy petition, but he has also had some positive news for fans who were left devastated by the axing of the Jerry Edgar spin-off. In an interview with The Irish Star, Connelly said:

I don’t wanna say it’s on the backburner, but Amazon is gonna see how Ballard does and then, hopefully, we’ll be able to bring Jerry back.

This is promising news for the Bosch television universe, as Jerry Edgar is a wildly popular character who deserves a full exploration in his own solo story. Connelly is clearly keen to revisit Bosch’s former partner, but Amazon’s statement confirming Jerry Edgar’s axing back in October of this year didn’t suggest it was part of their plans. Maybe something has changed, and Amazon has been buoyed by the progress of Ballard, which is currently in production. There is no doubt that Ballard will be a brilliant show, with Connelly’s joint Bosch and Ballard books being full of great crime stories that could be explored for years to come. However, fans are concerned that Titus Welliver’s guest spots in Ballard won’t be enough to flesh out his character arc, with so many of his own stories still yet to tell. Connelly weighed in on his thoughts about the upcoming Ballard spin-off series, in the same interview with The Irish Star:

I was always hesitant to make predictions about my other series, so maybe it’s my experience level now, but I feel without a doubt we have a hit here.

If Connelly says Ballard is going to be a hit, that is a good enough endorsement for the fans. The legendary author has been heavily involved in nine exceptional series in total featuring Harry Bosch, with a tenth to follow in March 2025, so there is absolutely no reason to doubt him. Also, Connelly was involved in the casting of Renee Ballard and the last time he helped cast one of his protagonists, fans got Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch. Enough said!

Even If Ballard Is A Success, Amazon Might Not Give The Go Ahead For The Jerry Edgar Spin-Off

While Michael Connelly’s statement about the Jerry Edgar spin-off’s future is promising, fans need to remember that the reinstatement of the series is in the hands of Amazon’s decision makers. Based on what has gone on in the last couple of months, even if Ballard is a huge success, will they really bring Jerry Edgar back? Bosch: Legacy was a proven commodity, but they canceled the series without a second thought, so there is no reason for fans to trust Amazon if they say Jerry Edgar will return in any meaningful way in the future. However, if Amazon are willing to do a U-turn on the Jerry Edgar series, then surely they can do the same for Bosch Legacy, right?

Signing the Save Bosch: Legacy petition is essentially also a vote to bring Jerry Edgar back, while also maintaining the stability of the upcoming Renee Ballard solo show. The Bosch-verse is potentially a family of shows, so a signature supporting Bosch: Legacy, is also backing Connelly’s overall universe. Imagine a world where there are interconnecting crime stories involving Bosch, Ballard and Edgar, all complimenting one another in a huge overarching story. In fact, Connelly put it best in the same interview with The Irish Star, when he mischievously joked that the MCU could actually refer to the ‘Michael Connelly Universe’, and not just Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. It might’ve been said in jest, but there is an undercurrent of truth to it:

I think there’s an understanding in Hollywood that this stuff works and that works to my advantage.

Connelly is so right, this kind of universe building does work in Hollywood, so why is Amazon putting a stop to its own MCU?
