Biggest Plot Holes In Sonic X Shadow Generations

Key Takeaways

  • While Sonic X Shadow Generations has a great story, there are several parts that just don’t make sense.
  • From plot holes to nonsensical time travel rules, you can find many inconsistencies in both Sonic and Shadow’s campaigns.

Did you know that giant space lizards are required for medical research? Well, they are in Sonic X Shadow Generations. As much as this game is both a celebration of the series and a course correction for the lore, some parts of its story make zero sense.

From Radical Highway to Space Colony ARK, we’ve ranked the best levels in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

To be clear, the game has the impossible task of recontextualizing murky lore details and tying up loose ends from nearly two decades of video games. While it does a great job for the most part, there are several plot holes, inconsistencies, and leaps in logic throughout both campaigns.

The Biolizard’s Creation

Who Knew Giant Space Lizards Help With Medical Research?

Gerald Robotnik screams as the Biolizard escapes its tube from Sonic X Shadow Generations.

The Biolizard debuted as the final boss in Sonic Adventure 2, but most of its backstory was unclear until Sonic X Shadow Generations. After the Metal Overlord boss fight, Gerald Robotnik explains that the Biolizard was created to find a cure for Maria’s illness.

While the context is nice, it begs the question: why would a 200-foot-long, laser-firing lizard cure Maria’s illness? You could argue that Gerald was looking for the key to immortality, but talk about an avant-garde approach to medicine.

It should be noted that Gerald’s motivations differ from game to game. Sometimes, he wants to achieve immortality. Other times, he’s developing a bioweapon for the military. Either way, it’s certainly an odd way to develop medication.

Shadow’s Creation

Teleporting Hedgehogs: The Best Medical Breakthrough

Shadow the Hedgehog sleeps in a pod from Sonic X Shadow Generations.

What do you do when a giant lizard doesn’t cure your granddaughter? Create a hedgehog with alien DNA, of course! When the first attempt at developing the Ultimate Life Form failed, Gerald worked with Black Doom to create the one and only Shadow the Hedgehog.

The professor certainly has a bizarre approach to the medical field. How exactly would a teleporting hedgehog with rocket shoes help him find a cure? Maybe someone should tell him that developing bioweapons for alien armies doesn’t give you a leg up in the pharmaceutical industry.

Even Shadow himself seems perplexed by this. In the first episode of Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings, he laments that his powers are useless when it comes to curing Maria. No kidding.

Blaze The Cat’s Party Invitation

That’s A Long Way To Travel For A Birthday Party

Blaze the Cat tells Sonic that she's grateful for his help in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Sonic Generations begins with a surprise birthday party for the Blue Blur, and everyone from Rouge to Espio is there. Even Blaze the Cat shows up, though it’s a bit odd when you think about it.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Vs. Sonic Frontiers – Which Game Is Better?

Sonic X Shadow Generations and Sonic Frontiers are both big steps for the series, but which is the better game?

Blaze’s backstory is a bit all over the place. Sometimes, she’s from the future, and other times, she’s from a parallel universe. Either way, how did she get here? Did Tails travel through time or space to send her an invitation? Talk about a dedicated party planner.

Silver The Hedgehog’s Boss Fight

Verify Your Identity By Trying Not To Die

Silver the Hedgehog flies through Crisis City while his name appears on screen in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Sonic and Silver have been rivals since 2006, but their reason for fighting in Sonic X Shadow Generations is a little strange. When you encounter Silver after beating the Planet Wisp level, he asks if you’re the real Sonic or just an impostor.

So, how does he verify the Blue Blur’s identity? Does he ask one of the dozen characters in the nearby area to vet for him? Nope. Instead, he throws cars at Sonic in an attempt to kill him. Needless to say, it’s not the most productive way to determine if he’s the real deal. Why does he suspect Sonic is a fake anyway?

Classic Sonic Doesn’t Speak

You Won’t Hear Any Quips From Him

Sonic has never been a hedgehog of few words, always having the perfect wisecrack or one-liner at any given time. However, his younger self is the exact opposite. Classic Sonic never utters a single word in the entire game, even when spoken to directly or asked a question.

It’s never explained in-game why this is. Classic Tails and Classic Eggman have no trouble speaking, so why is Classic Sonic always silent? It’s not like he’s never spoken before. After all, he had several voice lines in Sonic CD. Perhaps the shock of time travel has rendered him speechless?

3

The Fake Chaos Emerald

Who Put This Emerald Here?

Shadow comparing the real yellow Chaos Emerald with the fake Chaos Emerald from Sonic X Shadow Generations.

If you’ve played Sonic Adventure 2, you may remember the fake Chaos Emerald Tails created to trick Eggman. In Shadow Generations, the titular hedgehog finds it sitting on a pedestal aboard the Space Colony ARK. It’s a nice little reference, but it raises a few questions.

How exactly did the fake emerald get there? The last time it was seen was when Sonic used it to blow up the Eclipse Cannon. Did someone dig through the rubble, pick it up, and place it on the pedestal for safekeeping? You have to hand it to them: at least the ARK is well organized.

Sonic ’06 Levels And Bosses

Time Travel Is Confusing

Time travel plots can get confusing quickly, and this one is no exception. Throughout the game, Sonic and Shadow encounter characters and levels from Sonic ’06. There’s just one problem: canonically, none of them should exist.

At the end of Sonic ’06, the Blue Blur goes back in time to undo everything that happened in the game, ridding Mephiles the Dark and Crisis City of existence. And yet, they return in Sonic X Shadow Generations. Did the Time Eater somehow redo the events of Sonic ’06? Is it even possible to redo something that never happened?

The only in-game explanation is when Gerald says, “The damage done to the time stream may be stirring up echoes of past alterations.” Whatever that means.

Classic Sonic Gets Mistaken For Modern Sonic

A Case Of Mistaken Identity

Cream the Rabbit asking Sonic if he got a haircut in Sonic X Shadow Generations.

Sonic’s buddies may need to get their eyes checked because they can’t distinguish between his younger and older self. When you rescue your friends as Classic Sonic, they mention that he looks a little different, but they can’t put their finger on it.

Well, maybe it’s because he’s a couple of feet shorter, about 20 years younger, and has different-colored eyes. You’d think Sonic’s closest pals would be able to notice that, but some of them don’t even blink an eye. Even Vector – a seasoned detective – can’t tell the difference between them.
