Who Was Maya Okada And What Happened To Her In Life Is Strange: Double Exposure?
You will hear the name Maya Okada many times throughout Life Is Strange: Double Exposure. The references to her begin as early as Chapter 1, and increase the further you progress in the story. Though she may seem minor at first, Maya Okada has a large role to play as the story unfolds, and she’s the secret reason driving many of the main characters’ actions.

Who Was Maya Okada?
Maya Okada was a liberal arts undergrad at Caledon University, and she was best friends with Safiya Llewellyn-Fayyad. During a conversation with Maya’s former professor Gwen Hunter in Chapter 3, it’s revealed that the two of them were thick as thieves and you would hardly see one without the other.
Like Safi, Maya put her passion into writing and had begun publishing her work even as an undergrad.
When you’re in the North Quad during the final scene of Chapter 1, you’ll find a Cherry Blossom tree over by the snow plow. If you read the plaque you’ll learn that the tree was planted in memory of Maya. So what happened to her?
What Happened To Maya Okada?
The dark secret at Caledon University is that Lucas Colmenero, a professor and head of the Literature department, worked closely with Maya on her book, only to later steal her work and publish it under his own name under the title Wilder Beasts Than These.
Betrayed and broken, Maya later took her own life. The worst part is, everyone close to Maya and Safi covered up what Lucas had done to try to protect the university’s image.
It was this injustice that led Safi to write her own manuscript, All The Daughters We Don’t Talk About, which would’ve outed everyone involved with Maya’s death.
Did Maya Okada Have Powers Like Safi And Max?
There’s one point towards the end of the story when Safi tells Max, “Maybe we ARE cursed. You, me, and Maya.” When you hear this statement, it’s possible to wonder if maybe Maya had powers like Safi and Max.
Unfortunately, little is known about Maya beyond what we learn in the story, and she never actually appears as a character, beyond pictures taken when she was alive.
We know that she was a beautiful young lady, and a talented writer, whose life was taken too soon. Hopefully, her words and legacy can continue to live on through Safi.
