Safe House Puzzle

Uncover Every Secret Of The Rook

The hub area, a former KGB safehouse known as the Rook, lets you explore and talk to the supporting characters between missions. The Rook holds some secrets of its own, though. A dossier found on a patio gives you some points of interest to investigate.

With the help of a blacklight and some snooping, you unlock an underground bunker hiding a few more puzzles. Do all of these and eventually you unlock the code to an upstairs safe with a thousand dollars you can use to buy upgrades for Case, the main character.

This one is for the fans of 2009’s Modern Warfare 2. The brands featured throughout the real-world locations are fake. The game has a tendency to use these as easter eggs. Burger Town, for example, is the notable fast food chain that became famous when a mission in the 2009 game tasks you with defending one Burger Town restaurant from the Russian invasion.

The urgency with which you had to defend Burger Town made it feel like the fate of America rested in that one specific place. Ever since this moment more than a decade ago, it has always been funny to see Burger Town pop up again. In Black Ops 6, you can even find it in the Kuwait airport.

The Piano Is Accurate

In More Ways Than One

One of the safehouse puzzles involves a piano. The proper order of which notes to hit is hidden on the walls, only revealed by shining a blacklight on them. Accurate pianos are nothing new to gaming, and titles like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth have more in-depth piano playing mechanics.

The more interesting thing is the attention to detail to actually correclty write out the solfeggio notes as they would be in Eastern Europe. Where the west would be used to “ti” and “so”, the game did not just write those words in cyrillic, but used the proper “Си”(si) for “ti” and “Соль”(sol) for “so”.

If you speak Russian and can read the alphabet, you can read a lot more of the in-game text than most other people can.

Lawrence Sims Cameo

Playing Black Ops Cold War Pays Off

This one happens regardless of what you do in the game, but you would not find it special if you haven’t been playing Call of Duty for years. The mission Ground Control features you, Adler, and Lawrence Sims fighting side-by-side through an airport in Kuwait.

There is a clear rapport between Adler and Sims. Lawrence Sims was a supporting character in Black Ops Cold War from 2020, which also introduced Adler. He looks a bit different and is in military fatigues instead of civilian clothes, so you can’t be blamed for not recognizing him.

Another Modern Warfare Reference

The mission Most Wanted sees you infiltrating a dinner for then presidential candidate Bill Clinton. You can take your time admiring all the detail the developers put into the area before moving on with your objectives. If you go to the bikes in the middle of the room to the right of the entrance, you can see the name on the display being Sonny McTavish.

The game takes place in 1991. Gaming had already taken hold on a part of culture by this time, so you can see consoles and games in some levels. There is even a console in the safe house. The one game one display here is Pitfall, a seminal classic from Activision that debuted on the Atari 2600.

Pitfall would have been outdated by this point in time, but we appreciate the nod to it nonetheless. Activision also had a slew of other hits on the Atari 2600, including Kaboom, River Raid, and Dragster.
