Starfield mods could be the savior of Bethesda’s space RPG. After years of anticipation, the spiritual successor to Skyrim and Fallout has so far failed to inspire the same reverence as its close cousins – even the Shattered Space DLC is still languishing on Steam with a ‘mostly negative’ rating. For some, Bethesda’s heyday is embodied in The Elder Scrolls Morrowind. It’s when the developer was at its most original and ambitious. Though still in early development, one new Starfield mod feels inspired by that 2002 classic. Skyrim had a close equivalent. If The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 are still a ways off, perhaps it’s mods such as these that will make Starfield better.
In Morrowind, you can transition from the world map to a city seamlessly – there’s no big front gate, like the one at the foot of Whiterun, and no loading screen. ‘Open Cities Skyrim’ was a useful mod that allowed for the same, unobstructed transitions in The Elder Scrolls 5. Drawing on those inspirations, the catalog of the best Starfield mods now has a new entry. It’s early days, but if you’ve ever been exploring some of the biggest locations in the RPG, and wishing it were possible to move between shops and streets without always having to wait, one visionary Starfield modder is working on a solution.
‘Seamless City Interiors’ by ‘PanConKeso’ plays a little trick on Starfield’s code base: it tells the game that interior locations are in fact exterior locations, and because of that, the loading screens between one and the other are eliminated. Put more simply, it gets rid of the loading screens between outdoors and indoors. You can see it in action below:
A couple of caveats. First, the mod is in its earliest stages, and right now only works with a small number of locations in Starfield’s Neon City. Second, it is uncertain at the moment to what extent Seamless City Interiors will be compatible with other Starfield mods. Mods that make fundamental changes to a game’s functionality are sometimes impossible to use alongside other, smaller mods.
For example, if you use a mod that makes changes to Starfield’s interiors, if the game suddenly recognizes those interiors as exteriors, that mod may not work correctly. Either way, this is definitely one to watch, and could grow into one of the definitive mods for Starfield. You can download it right here from Nexus Mods.
