Future Square Enix Games To See Simultaneous Multiplatform Releases

Future Square Enix Games To See Simultaneous Multiplatform Releases

Key Takeaways

  • Square Enix made waves when it revealed that it was shifting to a more multiplatform-based approach for its future titles.
  • Now, in a new interview, Yoshi-P discussed just how that approach will potentially pan out.
  • Via that interview, future Square Enix titles will aim to release simultaneously across multiple platforms on the same day.

It’s not new news that Square Enix is aiming to vastly diversify its approach to video game releases. With the costs of development constantly rising, making things exclusive to one console isn’t feasible, and so the company affirmed in May that it was changing its practices.

In a financial release, Square said it will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy,” that involves the likes of Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony. The end result will be “an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles.” And those efforts are already being seen as Final Fantasy 14 was finally released on Xbox.

But as those plans continue to shake out, one of Square Enix’s most respected leaders has some thoughts on how he wants things to be done. The legendary Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida revealed in a recent interview that the end goal is for its games to be enjoyed by all at the same time and on the same day.

Gaming Is For Everyone

Speaking to 4Gamer, and as transcribed and translated by Eurogamer, Yoshida said that fans of Square Enix titles can expect the following:

“Square Enix titles will be released simultaneously on each platform more and more.”

“Of course, we want you to play it a lot on other platforms as well,” he said, specifically in reference to Fantasian Neo Dimension. That game, in particular, will see a release across all the major platforms, including Xbox.

Ideally, future Final Fantasy titles will follow that trend. Because, as it stands, Final Fantasy 14 only just came to Xbox after being on PlayStation for quite some time. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy has so far had two PS exclusive titles, with Crisis Core being a multiplatform release. If the third FF7 game were to come to Xbox day-and-date, then the first two would also need to come before that, and it remains to be seen when or if that’ll be the case.

All of this is to say that Square Enix certainly has the right ideas, but only time will tell if its approach will pan out exactly as described. Still, it’s good to hear so much of its leadership be vocal about this potential.
