Key Takeaways
- Destiny 2’s new episodic model is evolving with Revenant, offering more player freedom and connections to the overarching plot.
- The return to the Dreadnaught signals a major shift in the game’s future, potentially making it the new social hub and signature Vanguard ship.
- Episode 3’s focus on the Hive and Xivu Arath could lead to an epic confrontation on Oryx’s ship, tying up significant story threads.
Destiny 2‘s Episode 1 left a bit of a bittersweet taste in fans’ mouths as it had one of the best Exotic missions in the game, but the release’s structure left a lot to be desired in terms of pace and the identity of Episodes as whole versus the past seasonal model. Episode 2, Revenant, started off with big changes by making the seasonal story still divided into three acts, but each act can be played fully from the get-go without weekly gating. It’s clear that, for better or worse, the episodic model didn’t stick the landing, and Destiny 2‘s Codename: Frontiers will leave it behind. However, a big story change in Revenant is about to let Episode 3 shoot for the moon and beyond.
So far, Revenant’s story is still very much in its infancy due to only Act 1 being available, although the through-line seems to be clear. Destiny 2 players will need to help Eido and Variks by concocting new tonics in order to try and remove Mithax’s curse, all while fighting off the new Scorn created by Fikrul and then Fikrul himself. Still, there’s a key element to the overarching plot that may have gone unnoticed in the bigger picture – the HELM crashed, and Episode 3 will bring back the Dreadnaught.

Destiny’s Dreadnaught Ship Explained
Destiny 2: How Revenant’s Events Tie to Heresy’s Premise
The Dreadnaught is the iconic Hive ship piloted by Oryx during the events of The Taken King, and that’s where players have to travel in order to defeat him in the King’s Fall raid (both the original and the Destiny 2 version of it). The Dreadnaught is a massive spaceship that acted as Oryx’s Throne World, and it hosted several activities in the past due to its sheer size, many secrets, and deep lore origins. Given that the Vanguard may soon need a new ship, it seems like a logical progression for the Dreadnaught to become the main hub of operations moving forward.
Why Destiny 2’s Dreadnaught Will Likely Be The New Social Hub in Frontiers
Not only that, but the concept art shown by Bungie when discussing the future of Destiny 2 post The Final Shape launch included armor sets for Episode 3: Heresy that heavily resemble admiral suits. This leads further credence to this possibility, essentially suggesting with cosmetic items that players will soon be in charge of a vessel. Heresy takes players back to the Dreadnaught, so it would only make sense for the seasonal story to revolve around taking control of Oryx’s ship once and for all.
This could even entail a battle against the forces of Darkness led by Destiny 2‘s Xivu Arath, who players made mortal again alongside Eris Morn in Season of the Witch. Xivu Arath also tried to take control of the Dreadnaught before, so the pieces seem to be lining up. On top of it, Destiny 2‘s Codename: Frontiers future releases are tied to places beyond the Sol System, and the Dreadnaught is big enough to carry the whole Vanguard team and every other main NPC in the game along, much more so than the HELM ever could.
As such, it doesn’t seem like a coincidence that a seemingly irrelevant event in the grand scheme of things, like the HELM crashing into The Last City, happens right at the start of Episode 2. In fact, it seems to cement the idea that the HELM is gone thanks to other character remarks, such as Eido stating that her tonic lab will be the new base of operations. Considering that Destiny 2‘s Heresy Episode will be very Hive-centric with a heavy presence of the Dreadnaught as the patrol zone, returning to this classic location one last time before it becomes the new main social hub in Frontiers would be a great send-off.
