Destiny 2 Players Are Already Dressing Up as Characters From Bungie's Marathon

Key Takeaways

  • Bungie’s Marathon reboot in 2025 remains shrouded in mystery with a unique sci-fi aesthetic.
  • A Destiny 2 player impressively crafted a Marathon-themed cosplay based on teaser trailer characters.
  • The outfit included accurate Marathon accessories and themed gear, showcasing the community’s creativity.

Though concrete details about Bungie’s upcoming reboot of Marathon are few and far between, that’s not stopping Destiny 2 fans from making some cool cosplay based on characters revealed so far. One player has constructed a surprisingly accurate Marathon costume from parts to outfit a Destiny 2 Hunter Guardian.

Though set for release sometime in 2025, little is known about Bungie’s new Marathon game besides its placement in the extraction shooter genre. Despite a recent update from Director Joe Ziegler and news that closed Marathon play testing has already begun, the most concrete thing about the game right now is its striking, stark sci-fi aesthetic. First introduced more than a year ago with the game’s teaser trailer, Marathon‘s visual style leans into a fusion of high-concept far-future science fiction and a mysterious organic-seeming technology. Bright neon colors and plastics contrast with images of artificial clone bodies being grown and fabricated by cybernetic silkworms, all set against synth music run through with distortions.

While its release date may not be as early as fans were hoping for, 2025 is still expected to be a big year for Bungie’s Marathon reboot.

Unsurprisingly, fans of Bungie have latched onto that aesthetic and used it as a springboard for interesting creations, like Marathon cosplay in Bungie’s current game, Destiny 2. For a community-run fashion contest celebrating the 2024 Destiny 2 Festival of the Lost, DestinyFashion Reddit user skM00n2 created a Marathon-themed costume they called a “Runner” (which are what Marathon‘s players are called), based on parts used for a Destiny 2 Hunter, wowing community members with its accuracy.

Destiny 2 Marathon Costume Evokes a Runner From The Teaser Trailer

Destiny 2 Marathon Runner Costume Parts (Hunter)

  • Runner Mask (No Shader) – Head
  • Cystocrene Vest (Vanguard Burnished Steel) – Chest
  • Contender Grips (Welded Brass) – Arms
  • Iron Companion Boots (Spectral Indigo) – Legs
  • Deimosborn Cloak (Mind’s Eye) – Class Item

SkM00n2’s Marathon costume used the Runner from the 2023 Marathon teaser trailer as the primary inspiration, and gets surprisingly close. The centerpiece of the outfit is the new Runner Mask helmet, which does seem to be a deliberate reference by Bungie to Marathon, thanks to its bright pink dome, distorted visor, and a telltale “X06” marking on the side, which replicate the trailer Runner’s outfit closely. However, the rest of the outfit comes from a series of standard Hunter parts. The Runner’s pouch-laden combat vest is copied closely by the Beyond Light-era Crystocrene Vest. The Iron Companion Boots and Guardian Games Contender Grips couple with the backpack-equipped Deimosborn Cloak to complete the low-profile ensemble.

Fellow Destiny 2 players were impressed by skM00n’s creation, hailing their ability to make a Marathon outfit to go with the mask. Commenters also pointed out how skM00n went “above and beyond” in their effort by including themed objects beyond the armor. In keeping with the simple shapes and “3D printed” style of the Marathon trailer weapons, they selected the Insidious Pulse Rifle from the Vow of the Disciple raid colored in white to represent the Runner’s gun, as well as picking out a jumpship, emblem, Sparrow, and ghost shell for a complete Marathon-themed look.
