Dragon Age: The Veilguard only ports over three choices, all of which are from Dragon Age: Inquisition. While this is understandably disappointing, it doesn’t mean that former games and characters aren’t shown love; it just means that nothing in the writing serves as a way to undermine a personal player’s canon. Another reason is that Northern Thedas is so disconnected from Southern Thedas that some choices wouldn’t really show up, but those that do are treated in a way where players can fill in the blanks. For example, Dragon Age: The Veilguard does have a MAJOR Easter egg of sorts for Dragon Age: Origins.
While seeing the Hero of Ferelden in Dragon Age: The Veilguard would have been on a lot of fan’s wish lists, this is the next best thing. It pays respects to the Hero of Ferelden and to one of the most memorable moments in the entire franchise. It’s been long announced that players would finally, in a way, walk the halls of the fabled Grey Warden fortress of Weisshaupt, and of course, the Warden of all Wardens is going to be honored there.
How Dragon Age: The Veilguard References the Hero of Ferelden
Players will battle through Dragon Age: The Veilguard‘s Darkspawn as they make their way through the Siege of Weisshaupt, even first encountering an Archdemon. A lot unfolds here, eventually setting the player’s eyes on the Dragon Trap. This was constructed to kill an Archdemon ages ago, but on their way there, something may just catch their eye.
Investigating the glint in the central room, just after being given the goal of finding the Dragon Trap, will see players discover a Joining Chalice. As fans know, this is what Grey Wardens drink a mixture of Darkspawn blood, Archdemon blood, and Lyrium from in order to become Grey Wardens. This one, however, is recovered from Ostagar in Ferelden, which fans will also recall as the site where Loghain abandoned the field resulting in King Cailan’s death. Just before that, Grey Warden Duncan and Alistair (to a lesser extent) oversaw a Joining ritual in Ostagar where the only survivor would go on to end the Fifth Blight and become known as the Hero of Ferelden. Yes, this is the Joining Chalice players drink from in Dragon Age: Origins.
For some players, this might not be the same thing as seeing the Hero of Ferelden in the flesh, should they still live, but this is a great piece of memorabilia for the Hero of Ferelden, alive or dead. If they are alive, the last time players heard from them would be a letter revealing they are searching for a way to end The Calling. If they are dead, their memory is rightfully honored. This is also not the only way that The Veilguard alludes to the events of Origins, but this Easter egg is no doubt the most endearing.
