Original Gears 6 Plans Discussed By Former Developer

Key Takeaways

  • The next Gears of War title will not be continuing the plotline, but instead go back in time.
  • More specifically, the next Gears will be a prequel centered around E-Day.
  • In a new interview, the former Gears of War head, Rod Ferguson, discussed what the plans were for Gears 6 after the cliffhanger of Gears 5.

By now you’ve probably heard that the next Gears of War title will not be continuing the storyline established in the modern trilogy, or picking up after the cliffhanger that happened at the end of Gears 5.

Instead, as originally revealed during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase, the next Gears of War will be going back in time. More specifically, to E-Day, the massive event that kicked off everything. It’ll feature a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, and serve as a larger origin story for the duo, the world and everything we know about Gears.

That said, previously, The Coalition said that it hasn’t forgotten about Gears 6 and the cliffhanger it established in Gears 5. Back in June in an Xbox Wire post, it was stated that “We’re not retreating from that storyline in any way. But in [this] moment, we had an opportunity to write our next step, and this one just felt too good to miss.”

Gears of War: E-Day Is Rightfully Embracing Its Mad World Origins

Xbox is harkening back to a classic trailer with its latest reveal, and I already love it.

Now, flash forward to today, and we know what Gears 6 could’ve looked like if they had gone that direction.

Bye-Bye Sera

In an episode of IGN’s Podcast Unlocked, Rod Ferguson, who previously led development on Gears, shared what the next steps were.

Gears 5 Spoilers To Follow

At the tail end of Gears 5, it’s revealed that the UIR had a space program of some sorts to launch a Hammer of Dawn into space to fend off the Locusts. That wasn’t by mistake. Per Ferguson, the overarching goal of that plot point was to take Gears off the planet Sera.

“At the highest level, I was just getting us off Sera,” he said (Hat tip to Kotaki for the transcription). “So Gears 6 was to leave Sera. And so that was something we were building to. … By taking over this UIR territory, we’ve also kind of inherited their space program. So what I wanted to do with Gears 6 was to get you off Sera to encounter what that could mean to the rest of the galaxy or at least the rest of the solar system.”

While Gears in space is a pretty novel idea on its own, Ferguson also said it would’ve worked much differently than, say, Mass Effect. The tech would’ve been a lot more primitive, thus creating its own challenges for the crew. It also would’ve brought some new enemies as well.

Unfortunately, as we now know, those ideas never came to pass. And based on how willing to discuss them he was, they likely will never come to pass. Currently, E-Day has no set release date, and with Gears 5 being released in 2019, a return to Gears 6 will likely be a reboot or rehashing due to how long between the cliffhanger. Still, it’s a neat idea that would’ve no doubt massively refreshed a series that was beginning to feel stale.
