Bungie’s upcoming revival of the Marathon series is the subject of a problematic rumor, but the game can still avoid Concord’s fate.

How 2025 Will Be a Big Year for Bungie’s Marathon Reboot

Ever since the original reveal of Bungie’s Marathon reboot at the 2023 PlayStation Showcase, anticipation for the new, modern Marathon has been naturally high. Whether players are longtime fans of the original Marathon trilogy games, Bungie’s Destiny franchise, the PvP extraction-shooter genre, or all of the above, this reboot of a classic franchise is expected to be a big deal when it finally releases, although the release date for Marathon is still unknown.

Overall, official details about Bungie’s Marathon reboot as a PvP extraction shooter are still sparse, but Bungie recently revealed that fans who have been waiting for more news about the game won’t have to wait much longer. In a developer update video posted to Marathon’s YouTube, Marathon’s game director, Joe Ziegler, shared a status update on the game’s development along with some sneak peeks of the character concepts, while also announcing that there will soon be more reveals and open playtests for Marathon coming in 2025.

Marathon’s Public Playtests Will Finally Reveal What’s Behind the Curtain

So far, playtests for Bungie’s Marathon have been limited to a select handful of gaming content creators, and direct feedback from these early playtests was generally reserved for internal use, with playtesters only allowed to share their reactions to the overall game experience without specifics regarding the gameplay or quality. However, with future playtests anticipated to be opened to the public, this will open up the floodgates, allowing these conversations to start happening on all sorts of community public platforms.

’s upcoming playtests yet, players can wishlist the game on their preferred platform to stay up-to-date with the game’s latest announcements.

Bungie’s Marathon Reboot Will Soon Come Out of Hiding

So far, players who are excited about Bungie’s Marathon reboot have very little information to go off of. The initial reveal trailer showed off some of Marathon’s vivid visuals, but with Bungie rebooting the almost three-decade-old franchise as a PvP extraction shooter, not having any gameplay footage to contextualize such a drastic change means that fans are ultimately in the dark.

While Bungie’s Destiny franchise presumably offers a strong example of what to expect from Marathon, particularly how Destiny 2’s fast-paced gunplay could influence Marathon, these are ultimately two separate franchises, so this connection can only go so far. Consequently, the upcoming public playtests will be a big milestone for players waiting to see more concrete details about Marathon, specifically its gameplay. Whether or not the upcoming public playtests will indicate that Marathon’s release is imminent remains to be seen, but even if it’s still another year or two until the game releases, 2025 will be a great year for Marathon fans regardless.
