If you’re going to hell, you’re going to need ways to defend yourself. Luckily, Shadows of the Damned has you covered with a large array of weapons and, more importantly, weapon upgrades.

Your starting weapons won’t be able to carry you to the journey’s end. Thankfully, as you progress, you’ll encounter demons with larger health pools and more powerful attacks, necessitating stronger guns to blow them away. There are a multitude of ways to improve your arsenal, but know how to do it is key to victory.
How To Upgrade Weapons
The main way you will upgrade your weapons is through the use of red gems. They can be found throughout the game world, and let you alter a variety of gun statistics.
After finding a red gem, the game will let you know you have upgrades available via a pop-up in the lower left-hand corner.
When you open the upgrade menu, you’ll be able to better a weapon’s damage, reload speed, and capacity. Each improvement costs one red gem, and every stat can be increased up to five times. You can also enhance Garcia’s health if you find yourself dying too often.
While you’ll find plenty of red gems throughout the campaign, you can also purchase them from the shopkeeper, Christopher (he’s a cutie). Additional upgrades can be yours for only seventy-five white gems, the game’s main currency. It’s recommended to purchase a lot of red gems, considering the only other items you can buy are health pick-ups and ammo, which are much more plentiful within levels.
Blue Gems
There’s one more way your guns will be enhanced, and that’s by collecting blue gems. These will be awarded to you at certain story beats, usually after finishing a boss fight. Garcia will stick them into his companion, Johnson, and one of your weapons will be transformed into a more powerful version.
These visual overhauls usually grant new abilities as well, such as alternate firing modes. These can be as simple as new ways to deal damage, or offer some utility in solving environmental puzzles. However, these changes are dolled out at set moments in the plot and to specific guns, meaning you won’t be improving your favorite weapon every time.
Blue gems alter not only a gun’s appearance and function but also its name. Thankfully, acquiring this “new weapon” doesn’t wipe all the red gem upgrades you made to the previous model, allowing you to spec without worry.
