Much can be said about the dragons in the Fairy Tail, but their most intimidating aspect has to be their size. The sight of a winged lizard the size of a mountain flying over a city will put immense terror into the heart of everybody who is unfortunate enough to witness it. So let’s talk about some of these colossal dragons. In fact, let’s rank them, from a relatively small one to an obscenely humongous one.

It should be said that the dragons on this list have all appeared at some point, either in the main Fairy Tail saga or in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest. However, not all of them are still alive. Dragons are incredibly rare creatures, and that’s why it’s worth including those who are no longer in this world here. With that out of the way, here are the largest dragons in Fairy Tail.

10 Zirconis

Zirconis is one of the many dragons that come out of the Eclipse Gate near the end of the Grand Magic Games arc to destroy the Kingdom of Fiore. Just like the other dragons in Fairy Tail, Zirconis is a highly intelligent being. Not only that, he is actually quite relaxed and carefree. He finds it amusing to prey on humans, but he also doesn’t mind conversing with them.

Matching the size of a small building, Zirconis is undoubtedly huge. He can cause a lot of destruction and kill a lot of people simply by moving around. However, when examining at dragons as a whole, Zirconis’ size is actually quite average. There are several other dragons in the series, most of whom did not make it onto this list, who are the same size as Zirconis. Therefore, it’s fair to think of him as a representation of the average dragon.

9 Grandeeney

Grandeeney is the foster mother of one of the Dragon Slayers in Fairy Tail, Wendy Marvell. She taught Sky Dragon Slayer magic to Wendy and pretty much took care of her until Grandeeney, along with other dragons like Igneel and Metalicana, disappeared without a trace on July 7, X777.

Despite her massive body and powerful magic, rivaling that of Igneel the Fire Dragon King, Grandeeney is actually the most gentle dragon on this list, by far. She is also the only dragon on this list whose body is covered by soft white fur instead of hardened scales. This, along with the fact that she is a master of wind magic, makes Grandeeney one of, if not the fastest, dragon in existence.

8 Motherglare

Similar to Zirconis, Motherglare is also one of the dragons that came through the Eclipse Gate. Unlike Zirconis, however, Motherglare is completely devoid of emotion. His mind has been fully taken over by the evil mastermind of this incident, Future Rogue Cheney. That’s why, throughout his brief appearance in the Grand Magic Games arc, he is nothing more than a mindless beast whose sole purpose is to kill and destroy.

Appearance-wise, Motherglare looks quite similar to the iconic giant monster Godzilla, particularly its rounded lower body and lizard-like head. The main difference between the two is Godzilla has spiky spines, while Motherglare has massive rounded scales. As for his size, Motherglare is on the upper end of the mid-sized dragons.

7 Viernes

Viernes is quite possibly the most interesting dragon on this list. From his power, which can turn everything into gold, to his body that looks like a golden sphinx, to his state of being that is currently sealed into nothing more than a concept, everything about Vierness is so fascinating.

Viernes may be the first Dragon God mentioned here, but that doesn’t mean he is the smallest one. That title goes to Selene, the Moon Dragon God, who is about as big as a two-story house. But don’t take their size as a sign of weakness. After all, despite Vierness and Selene being the two smallest Dragon Kings, they are easily in the top three in terms of power level among their peers.

6 Igneel

Igneel is the foster father of the main character of Fairy Tail, Natsu Dragneel. He taught Fire Dragon Slayer magic to Natsu and took care of him for years. This creates an interesting duality in Igneel. As the Fire Dragon King, he is known for his tremendous firepower and ruthlessness. On the other hand, the same Fire Dragon turns into a wise, caring, and compassionate father figure when he is with Natsu. Just like Grandeeney, Igneel also disappeared one day without a trace, leaving Natsu behind.

When it comes to appearance, Igneel has the classic fantasy dragon look that most fantasy fans are familiar with—a lizard-like body, powerful hind legs, muscular arms that can operate like forelegs, bat-like wings, a scaly body, horns, fangs, claws, and a body as big as a mountain. Add to that the scarlet body that can be seen from miles away and a roar that will send chills down the spines of everybody who is unfortunate enough to hear it, and Igneel is one disaster-level dragon.

5 Acnologia

The Black Dragon Acnologia is one of the ultimate enemies of the main Fairy Tail story, along with the Black Wizard Zeref. Like every dragon in this series, Acnologia has existed for hundreds of years. What makes him different, however, is that he spent most of those hundred years killing, destroying, and terrorizing both humans and dragons alike.

Despite his tremendous power and fearsome reputation, Acnologia is just slightly bigger than Igneel. Make no mistake, he is still a flying mountain, but what makes him so terrifying is not his size, but rather his indiscriminate violence and destructive power. Here’s a bit of trivia to showcase how terrifying Acnologia truly is: Acnologia’s scales used to be a different color. One day, he went on a rampage, killed many dragons, and then bathed in their blood until his scales turned pitch black. From then on, he was known and feared as the Black Dragon.

4 Ignia

Ignia is Igneel’s biological son. He inherited his father’s mastery of fire and his overall appearance. His personality, however, couldn’t be more different than his father’s. Igneel is known as a wise and compassionate dragon who cares about humans and his fellow dragons. Ignia, on the other hand, only cares about himself. If there’s anybody who dares to stand in his way, be it dragons or humans, he won’t hesitate to burn them to ashes.

In many ways, Ignia is an upgraded version of Igneel. He shares the same scarlet scales as his father, but as the Fire Dragon God, Ignia is bigger, beefier, and stronger than Igneel. Another major difference between this father-and-son pair is the fact that Ignia prefers to use his human form and only transform back to his dragon form for combat. Igneel, on the other hand, always stays in his dragon form.

3 Dogramag

Officially, there are five known Dragon Gods in the world—Aldoron, Mercphobia, Viernes, Ignia, and Selene. What most people don’t know, however, is the fact that there was actually a sixth Dragon God a long time ago. His name was Dogramag, the Earth Dragon God. Unfortunately for him, he was slain by Elefseria, the mage who commissioned the 100 Years Quest.

Just to help explain how massive Dogramag is, when he died, his remains slowly turned into the Great Labyrinth of Dogra. This underground labyrinth consists of long and narrow corridors that span miles and miles. As a dragon, Dogramag’s body is made out of solid rock, making his defense one of the best among the Dragon Gods. As we now know, that defense is nothing once the enemy finds out about his glaring weakness, which we won’t reveal here to avoid any spoilers.

2 Mercphobia

Compared to his Dragon Gods peers, Merchphobia is unique in both his personality and appearance. Out of all of them, Mercphobia is the one that champions the idea of coexistence with humans the most. That’s why he is considered a God and a Guardian by the people of Ermina, the town where he has resided for hundreds of years.

When it comes to his appearance, unlike other dragons that look like winged lizards, Mercphobia looks more like a Sea Serpent. To be more precise, he looks like an incredibly massive sea serpent. When he appears out of the water near the coast of Ermina, his body will cast a shadow that can cover the entire town like an eclipse. That’s how humongous this water dragon is. Since this form is clearly terrifying, Mercphobia prefers to walk around Ermina in his human form.

1 Aldoron

The biggest city on the continent of Guiltina is called Drasil. The Great City of Drasil is actually made up of five individual and fairly large cities, and every single one of them is located on the body of Aldoron, the Wood Dragon God. There’s one city on top of his right hand, one on top of his left hand, one on each shoulder, and one on his back. So yes, the word “colossal” is not enough to describe how massive this dragon is. He is truly a living Himalayan Mountain Range.

Interestingly enough, despite hosting thousands of people on his body, Aldoron actually despises humans. The only reason why he lets them live on his body is because he needs their magical energy in order to grow bigger and stronger while in his hibernated state. So, in a way, the Wood Dragon God and the many people of Drasil are living in a symbiotic relationship. The people enjoy the bountiful land and forest on Aldoron’s body, while Aldoron himself siphons their magical energy.

One thing worth remembering about the dragons in Fairy Tail, be it in the main series or the sequel, is the fact that their body size does not directly correlate with their strength. After all, Acnologia is arguably the most powerful dragon on this list, but he’s not even half the size of Aldoron. Sure, Aldoron may be able to destroy an entire city with a single punch, but Acnologia’s Dragon Roar packs enough power to shatter an entire country.
