Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña has recently opened up and reflected on her time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gamora, revealing that she thinks she could’ve done more with her character’s storyline. First appearing in American comic books under Marvel Comics, The Guardians sprung into life in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 in January 1969, which one of its creators, Roy Thomas, said came about from an exciting idea that saw super-guerrillas fighting against Russians and Red Chinese who had taken over the USA. However, it would be another five years until the team were seen again, reappearing in Marvel Two-In-One issue five in 1975 before finally getting its own series in 1976.
Since then, The Guardians of the Galaxy has seen huge success under Marvel Studios’ direction when the film was released in 2014 and accumulated $773.3 million worldwide, making it the third-highest-grossing film of 2014. Directed by super-hero enthusiast James Gunn, who previously wrote the screenplay for the 2002 film, Scooby-Doo, as well as the remake of Dawn of the Dead, The Guardians of the Galaxy tells the story of a group of intergalactic criminals who must pull together to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.

Zoe Saldaña Talks About Her Role as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy
In an open and frank conversation with Variety, Zoe Saldaña explained why she wishes she could redo the Avengers movies, as well as her role as Gamora in The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. Saldaña expressed that, despite her iconic portrayal of the character, she would like to go back and do a better job at Gamora, stating that she feels like she could have done more with her story. She also mentioned her character, Nyota Uhura in Star Trek, feeling like that was another role she could have improved. Thankfully, Saldaña revealed that she’s already signed on for Star Trek 4 and has high hopes for the character to take on more responsibility than before.
“I wish I could go back and do a better job for Gamora [in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers‘ movies] and Uhura [in ‘Star Trek’]. But I guess I just …I think I did enough, but I could have done more. That’s just how I am.”
Saldaña’s latest role in the operatic drama Emilia Pérez sees the actress take on the role as Rita, an unappreciated lawyer stuck in a dead-end job but is then enlisted by Emilia, a fearsome cartel leader. Other than her incredible performances in super-hero movies, Saldaña’s previous movies have included the likes of Avatar, Losers, Colombiana, and as the iconic American singer, Nina Simone, in the film Nina. As for The Guardians of the Galaxy, a recent rumor has suggested that two faces might be returning to the MCU. If true, Glenn Close and John C. Reilly could have significant roles in the series, potentially through flashbacks or as survivors, but as yet, only time will tell.
For Marvel fans who can’t wait for the next Avengers movie, there’s some good news on the horizon. Avengers 5, which was retitled as Avengers: Doomsday, has been confirmed by the Russo brothers and will begin filming in Spring 2025. Alongside Robert Downey Jr., the cast will comprise Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.
