How To Get Rat Bone and Rat Skin in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Horizon Zero Dawn is an open-world game that features hunting, an essential element in any well-designed open world. Although you won’t find massive animals due to the game’s lore, there are smaller creatures like fish, boars, rabbits, squirrels, and more.

The wildlife in Horizon Zero Dawn isn’t just there to make the world more lively; it plays an important role in gameplay. Animals provide crucial resources that allow players to upgrade their gear — one such valuable resource is Fox Skin. The guide below covers why you need Fox Skin and how to efficiently collect it.

How To Acquire Fox Skin in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

You guessed it — Fox Skin is acquired by hunting foxes. As a rare resource, Fox Skin doesn’t always drop on the first successful hunt, or even the second. To gather what you need, you’ll have to find, chase, and hunt foxes repeatedly.

First, you need to locate foxes. Unlike robots, animals don’t have marked locations on the map. Foxes can usually be found in forested areas, you can try looking for them in the eastern region near Mother’s Crown camp.

Once there, activate your Focus to spot fox outlines. Tagging them will help keep track so they don’t disappear into the grass. Then, take out your bow and arrow and hunt as many as possible.

Using Precision Arrows for long-range shots seems to increase the drop rate slightly, though it’s still not guaranteed.

Why You Need Fox Skin in Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Foxes can be challenging to hunt, but luckily, you won’t need many Fox Skins throughout the game. In a standard playthrough, only five Fox Skins are required, while Ultra Hard difficulty calls for eight.

Each of the following upgrades needs one Fox Skin:

  • Hunter Bow Quiver Upgrade 4
  • Modifications Satchel Upgrade 4
  • Tripcaster Ammo Pouch Upgrade 3

Additionally, the Golden Fast Travel Pack requires one Fox Skin (three in Ultra Hard difficulty), and the Shadow Rattler requires one (two in Ultra Hard). Prioritize the Golden Fast Travel Pack, as it’s an extremely useful item.

Once you have the needed Fox Skins, you’re set — just avoid selling them to merchants.
