Suda51 and Shinji Mikami are back with the remaster of their violent and hilarious game from 2011, Shadows of the Damned.
However, Paula won’t be the helpless and weak character you’ve been following for most of the story. She has wings now, and she can attack you with flying kisses, regular enemies, and other tricks under her demonic sleeves. Learn the best strategy against Paula in this guide.
How To Defeat Paula – First Phase
Paula will be wearing a white dress and her wings will be of the same color, but you’ll notice that some of the six wings will be red — that’s her weak point right there. Shoot it with the Dentist, the best weapon for this fight thanks to its lock-in option that will make you succeed in every shot you take.
Always remember that the crosshair needs to turn red, which means that the target has been locked on.
As you shoot her wings, Paula will summon a regular enemy that is wrapped in Darkness. Use your Light Shot to free it and be able to eliminate the threat. She will also shoot hearts at you from time to time, which you can dodge in any direction before they touch you by rolling around.
Paula can also throw a whirlwind at you, with a wide range. You’ll see the boss wrapping herself with her things for a few seconds before throwing this projectile. It’s best to run to the opposite side of where it comes to avoid it.
Another move in her repertoire comes from below the ground, with rivers of blood rising at high speeds. Running is not a good option here because you barely see the attack coming and once you see the first stream close to you, it’s probably too late. What you have to do is roll to either side, making good use of your invulnerability frames.
Once you have dealt enough damage, grab the eye on the center of the arena, and look for the door with the baby face asking for it. There are many doors here and all of them will want a strawberry instead of the eye. When you find the correct one, open it and Garcia and Paula will move to the next and final stage.
You’ll see the dialogue globe popping up from far away.
How To Defeat Paula – Second Phase
Instead of being in a stable location, you’ll have to constantly move forward because the area of light will be small and moving. Paula will only move backward, and you’ll see that the other four wings of her are now red. This will be the perfect job for your Dentist.
This second phase is almost the same in every other regard — Paula won’t make new moves, although she will summon a slightly better enemy, who is also wrapped in darkness. If you can, always deal quickly with it because it can get annoying easily. A Light Shot and one or two shots from your shotgun should be enough.
If your health is low and you’re out of drinks, a new one will spawn every few meters.
Then it’s a matter of moving forward, dodging the projectiles you already know and the darkness behind you, and breaking Paula’s wing until no more red ones are left. When all of them are broken, you’ll enter a cutscene and the fight will be almost over.
As a nice touch, the last moments of the battle will be against a human Paula, and you don’t have to shoot her or do any damage. Just be with her and wait for the Darkness around you to take out your HP.
