Key Takeaways
- Fantastic Beasts franchise likely won’t continue, per Eddie Redmayne.
- The third movie is the lowest-grossing in the Wizarding World franchise.
- Uncertainty plagues future of Fantastic Beasts; fans may see Newt in a future theme park.
Fans who enjoy the Harry Potter universe spin-off, Fantastic Beasts, seem to have some bad news on the horizon, according to the Newt Scamander actor, Eddie Redmayne. Following the release of the series’ latest 2022 entry, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, things haven’t been going too well for the fantasy films set within the world of Harry Potter. Directed by David Yates, who also helmed The Girl in the Café, which won three wins at the Emmy Awards, Fantastic Beasts explores the plot of magizoologist Newt Scamander, who arrives in New York during his worldwide tour in a bid to research and rescue magical creatures.
Despite a lukewarm critical reception, the third movie in the series, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, grossed a somewhat healthy outcome at around $407 million worldwide in April but, unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to make The Secrets of Dumbledore a success, making it the lowest-grossing film in the Wizarding World franchise. Since then, the future of the Fantastic Beasts franchise has been uncertain, maybe more so due to the antics of franchise staple Ezra Miller and the controversy around J. K Rowling, but still, an optimistic outcome still lingered in fans’ minds that the series would find its magical spark again.

Fantastic Beasts Star Confirms the Series Likely Won’t Continue
Talking with ComicBook about his new Peacock thriller series, Day of the Jackal, Eddie Redmayne expressed that Fantastic Beasts is unlikely to continue and fans may have seen the last of his character, Newt Scamander. Although Redmayne couldn’t definitely guarantee that the series is truly done and dusted as it depended on what Warner Bros. and J.K Rowling had in mind, but, as far as he is aware, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is likely the last time fans will see Newt. However, Redmayne did add that his character might pop up when Universal Orlando Resort’s new Ministry of Magic expansion theme park opens in May 2025, where fans may get a look at what Newt was up to in France, so maybe it’s not all doom and gloom after all.
Last year, director David Yates commented on the Fantastic Beasts franchise and expressed that the progress for the series would be paused. Yates also mentioned that he was really proud of how Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore turned out, but taking a break was much needed after such a lengthy filming journey. Previously, Mads Mikkelsen addressed his trepidation at taking on the role of Gellert Grindelwald and replacing Johnny Depp. Mikkelsen expressed that he felt the role was very intimating due to how much of Depp’s character lay within Grindelwald, so he had to make sure he came up with his own version of the antagonist.
It seems as though since Rowling’s brand has seen a huge downfall in recent times, coupled with a string of controversies to do with the series’ actors, more and more fans have seemingly lost interest in Fantastic Beasts, which is truly a shame. Maybe there’s a glimmer of light in the dark for the franchise still and maybe, after some time, a different approach can be taken that will see Harry Potter fans want to return again.
