A Game of Thrones Movie Might Be On The Way

A Game of Thrones Movie Might Be On The Way

Key Takeaways

  • A Game of Thrones movie is in early development by Warner Bros, with no plot details or attached writer and director yet.
  • Multiple spin-offs are already in development by HBO.
  • Many Game of Thrones spin-offs have failed to make it through development.

As the saying goes what is dead may never die, and that’s particularly true of the Game of Thrones franchise. Among the many spin-offs currently in the works, reports have emerged that a feature film may also be on the way from Warner Bros.

Game of Thrones was an unprecedented success story for HBO, drawing millions of viewers over its eight-season run. The TV series was an adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s acclaimed fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire, which chronicles the schemes of the warring houses of Westeros as they all seek to hold the highest power in the realm and claim the Iron Throne. Seasons 7 and 8 of Game of Thrones notably went off-book from Martin’s novels as the author is still yet to publish the latter two in his saga. However, that didn’t stop the HBO series from concluding and HBO has since put many stories into development from Martin’s world.

A Game of Thrones Movie Is In Early Development

The latest Game of Thrones development is that a feature film may be coming, set in Martin’s fantasy world. The Hollywood Reporter claimed that multiple sources said a Game of Thrones movie is in early development at Warner Bros. The project is in such early development that a director and writer are yet to be attached and no plot details about the prospective film were revealed.

HBO already has multiple spin-offs in development in the Game of Thrones franchise. House of the Dragon is the first of these to make it to air, with the second season concluding earlier this year and a third on the way. HBO will also soon release A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is based on Martin’s novellaThe Tales of Dunk and Egg. A series focusing on the original Targaryen, Aegon the Conqueror, and his conquest of Westeros is also moving steadily forward with Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) attached as a writer. A Sea Snake series focused on the ventures of House of the Dragon’s Corlys Velaryon is one of a few animated Game of Thrones spin-offs also currently in development.

A Game of Thrones feature film would be a first for the franchise, which up until this point has, only explored the television format. However, some episodes of Game of Thrones in its later seasons were screened in cinemas to help promote the series. Game of Thrones has always managed to maintain a cinematic aesthetic thanks to its budget, meaning it should translate easily to the big screen when the time comes. However, it’s worth noting that many Game of Thrones spin-offs have fallen apart over the years, so it’s possible this movie concept may never eventuate either.

There are so many corners of the Game of Thrones universe that are ripe for exploration, but which story is right for the big screen is the main question. Potentially the Game of ThronesJon Snow sequel that Kit Harington was attached to could be a good choice, as audiences would likely return to the cinema to see their favorite characters on-screen again, particularly if the movie was to explore what happened after the events of Game of Thrones.
