While nobody has ever seen one in real life, zombies are very common in the gaming world. Many different types of games include these undead beasts. But they don’t always act the same in every title. Some games have you contend with fast-paced zombies that may even mutate into something greater. Plenty of other games, though, stick with the traditional slow shuffling version.

No matter what type of zombie you’re up against, they’re fun to kill. It’s unclear why, but blowing away a zombie with a shotgun or blasting their head off with a pistol is always satisfying. The following PC games certainly make killing zombies fun, and they’re the best titles to include the monsters.
Updated on November 01, 2024, by Sanyam Jain: While there are a lot of games that are entirely focused on defeating zombies, there are also quite a few that have other aspects like open-world exploration or base-building, and Once Human is a great example of that.

Dead Island 2 is an open-world zombie game with some RPG elements. It takes place in Los Angeles. The place is quite a bit different from the real LA, though, because it’s a quarantine zone filled with zombies. While this seems like a disastrous situation, the game is actually light-hearted and funny. After all, the other survivors you meet are often comically odd.
Things get a bit more serious in first-person combat. You must use a mix of melee weapons and guns to take down the usually large hordes that attack you. The whole experience is silly and fun.

One of the most exciting moments in any zombie game is seeing a horde of the undead charging at you. No title offers a better version of this than World War Z. It features very large groups of zombies piling on top of one another as they attempt to make their way up walls and buildings to reach you.
When they get there, you must gun them down. You can do so in either third or first-person if you’re playing the Aftermath version. The base version is just third-person. Either way, you shoot them all as a team since this is a classic squad-based zombie shooter.

While an Open-World Survival Crafting multiplayer game might not sound great for having a zombie experience, the execution done in this game makes it one of the best out there. Depending on the scenario you’re playing, the game’s map is divided into various small areas where you’ll consistently be battling zombies.

Most zombie games require you to go toe-to-toe with large zombie hordes. In State of Decay 2, however, you are best served to avoid the undead the best you can. This is because it’s more of a survival game where you must manage and keep a community safe.
Plus, if you do die, then that survivor is gone forever, and you must play as another survivor. So, there are consequences to becoming zombie food. This doesn’t mean you need to avoid combat at all. Sometimes, you will need to battle some zombies as you attempt to find resources. You just need to be careful as you’re doing it. This adds a welcome level of tension to the experience.

Dead Rising 2 is both serious and ridiculous at the same time. Protagonist Chuck Greene can wear silly outfits and create wacky weapons. Yet, he also has to regularly give his young daughter medicine to keep her from becoming a zombie. Nobody managed to do that for the rest of Fortune City, as most people have transformed into undead creatures prior to the events of the game.
In the game, Chuck, his daughter, and several survivors find themselves stuck in a mall filled with these zombies. You have to wade through them to make your way around the place and complete missions. All of it is to keep your daughter alive and find a way out of this perilous situation.

Technically, Days Gone doesn’t include zombies, as the antagonistic forces in the game are actually called Freakers. Yet, they’re close enough to zombies for Days Gone to be considered a zombie title. These Freakers exist due to a pandemic that turned humans into these beasts. Naturally, this led to the loss of many lives.
The protagonist, Deacon, thought his wife was one of the victims. Yet, he discovers there’s a chance that she may still be alive. This serves as the beginning of his adventure. During it, you can ride around the open world on a bike. Along the way, you will have to deal with plenty of monsters, either stealthily or by gunning them down. The latter is easier said than done.

Dying Light 2
- Released

February 4, 2022
Dying Light 2 brings two ideas together. They combine zombies with parkour. Thankfully, the zombies aren’t the ones parkouring around. That would be you as you traverse the zombie-filled open-world while attempting to stay off the streets where most of the beasts are roaming. The parkour master you’re controlling is called Aiden. He is searching for a doctor who did experiments on him and his sister when they were kids. In the process, he gets involved in more complicated situations.
Free-running around the city is where this game really shines. It feels very smooth and responsive to jump across buildings and climb things. When running away isn’t possible, you must fight the beasts, mainly using a range of melee weapons.

Some zombie games are slow and suspenseful. Left 4 Dead 2, on the other hand, is the exact opposite. It’s a very fast-paced and chaotic game due to the fact you face off against fast-moving hoards of monsters that ambush you regularly.
The whole experience is split up into different campaigns. Each one has you fighting your way from safehouse to safehouse until you get a chance to escape the area. There’s not really a story. This game is just about action, and it’s very fun, especially when you fill your squad with friends.

Resident Evil 2

January 25, 2019
Resident Evil is arguably the most influential gaming series when it comes to zombies. The first few entries in the series really popularized zombies in gaming. The second one got a remake in 2019, which is perhaps the best zombie game ever.
It features two separate campaigns featuring different protagonists. Both of them find themselves trapped in a zombie-filled Racoon City. They attempt to get to safety while also getting to the bottom of how the outbreak started. The game includes slow-moving zombies that drag themselves towards you. They’re very resistant to firearms and can kill you quickly if they get their hands on you. You need to avoid their grasp, manage your resources, and complete some puzzles to make it to the end of the compelling game.
