Netflix’s Korean-language thriller Squid Game is returning for another set of games this December and a new trailer has revealed how things will play out in the second season.

Squid Game was an unprecedented success for Netflix. Not only did the series become Netflix’s most-watched foreign language TV series, but it also became the most-watched series on Netflix full stop, a milestone that still hasn’t passed. It’s no surprise then that a second season of Squid Game was in demand and went into development shortly after. The premise of Squid Game pits 456 desperate players against each other to win a share of 45.6 billion South Korean won in a secret contest comprising a series of deadly children’s games. The first season saw the winning player, Gi-hun, exit the game with the prize money, but also with a burning desire to get revenge on the game makers for what they put people through.

Squid Game Season 2 Trailer Confirms New Story Details

A new trailer for Squid Game Season 2 has been released by Netflix and it hints at how things will play out in the second season. It appears that Gi-hun will return to the games as player 456, three years after he first won, but this time, given his experience, he acts as a mentor to the other players, guiding them through each of the deadly contests. Some familiar games from the first season return, including Red Light, Green Light, but it seems like there may also be some new challenges for players to pass in Squid Game Season 2. Gi-hun is also seen trying to coerce the players to vote to abandon the game before it’s revealed that he is a returning player.

It’s not quite clear how Gi-hun is roped back into another round of the game, but he was adamant in the Season 1 finale that he was going to put a stop to the Frontman and the twisted trials. It seems like his mission may be to undo their work from the inside, but that also means he’ll need to survive each of the games long enough to get his chance.

Familiar Faces Return From Squid Game Season 1

Apart from Lee Jung-jae returning as Gi-hun, another familiar face is Lee Byung-hun’s return as Hwang In-ho, aka the Frontman and overseer of the game. Gi-hun’s trauma from the games has turned his optimistic personality into hardened determination, which sets things up for a fiery conflict between the two. Another returning face is Wi Ha-jun’s Hwang Jun-ho, aka the detective who was attempting to find his brother last season, before he learned his sibling was actually the Frontman behind the entire operation. Season 1 left Jun-ho’s fate uncertain after he was shot in the shoulder by his brother and fell off the side of a cliff, but it appears he survived his ordeal and is back with a new mission in Squid Game Season 2.

Season 2 of Squid Game is just the first in a range of content coming from the K-drama. Netflix confirmed there is a third and final season of Squid Game set to release in 2025, not to mention an English reboot of the series is currently in the works with David Fincher attached.
