Limit 2 & Kingmaker Game Modes, Explained
Ever since the switch from Overwatch 1 to Overwatch 2, the debate of 5v5 and 6v6 formats has been a heated discussion among the playerbase. For some players, this shift was one of the best changes made to the game, and solved a lot of issues such as infuriating meta comps, the infamous double shield strategy, and queue times, just to name a few. However, to others, moving from 6v6 to 5v5 was one of the most negative changes to occur, removing the double Tank and essentially killing the Main Tank and Off Tank roles.
This has caused quite a bit of strain on Tank in 5v5, as this is the only role operating solo as opposed to with another ally to assist them in their job. Even with balance changes, there is a lot of pressure on Tank players in 5v5 that has caused developers to look into the possibility of altering the rules and team numbers or compositions through a series of Quick Play: Hacked opportunities with limited-time modes. Two of these are set to go live in an update during Season 13 of Overwatch 2, and will both involve variations of the old 6v6 structure. Limit 2 & Kingmaker Game Modes in Overwatch 2, Explained
In Overwatch 2, Quick Play: Hacked is a concept where Sombra ‘Hacks’ the rules of the Quick Play game mode in the form of limited-time opportunities. This brings plenty of new tweaks and changes to the core structures of the game, as well as the chance to test out new mechanics, abilities, and ideas – such as the Pickable Passives that occurred in the past.
Two Quick Play: Hacked opportunities are occurring during the latter half of Season 13. Both of these game modes are altercations of the standard 5v5 format, testing how it may be altered to allow more freedom between each role and overall team composition, and are titled Kingmaker and Limit 2.
Limit 2 in Overwatch 2, Explained
Limit 2 is the first of the two upcoming Quick Play: Hacked limited-time modes. In this altered Quick Play format, each team has five different players, but the freedom to choose between all roles. However, each role has a maximum limit of two players, meaning players are restricted to one of the following compositions:
- 1 Tank, 2 DPS, 2 Supports (Standard)
- 2 Tanks, 2 DPS, 1 Support
- 2 Tanks, 1 DPS, 2 Supports
When running more than one Tank hero, Open Queue rules will apply, meaning Tanks receive health nerfs.
Kingmaker in Overwatch 2, Explained
Similar to Limit 2, Kingmaker is also limited to two players per role at maximum. However, there is also an added bonus for the player who ends up alone in their role, which helps make up for being the sole contributor to your job. Much like Limit 2, this enables players to have more freedom when it comes to establishing a team composition, as well as providing some incentive (or potential strategy, depending on how significant the bonuses/buffs are to each role) to the player who remains alone.
Both Kingmaker and Limit 2 are being used as a starting point before going into 6v6 tests, which will require much more significant tweaks and changes due to needing to make more altercations and reworks to specific heroes to ensure they aren’t overpowered in this format.
