Every Halo Character Whose Story is Still Open-Ended

The Halo universe is filled with a multitude of diverse, multifaceted factions and characters beyond the Master Chief. From the alien Arbiter to the artificial intelligence Cortana, characters of all kinds can be found in Halo, each featuring their own unique traits and story arcs. Many characters in Halo have had their stories completed, such as Sergeant Avery Johnson, but many new and classic characters’ storylines remain incomplete. With Halo Studios seemingly working towards rebooting the Halo series with a rumored Halo: Combat Evolved remake, the video game company should strive to complete some of the universe’s most intriguing characters’ stories before the original timeline is abandoned or finished.

Halo’s Incomplete Alien Character Storylines

One of the most requested characters to have their story finished or highlighted in another Halo game is the Arbiter Thel ‘Vadam. Following the end of the Covenant War, Arbiter was thrust into a Sangheili civil war between his Swords of Sanghelios and Covenant remnants. Peace was briefly achieved with the fall of Jul ‘Mdama’s Covenant at the Battle of Sunaion, but Sanghelios was quickly overtaken by Cortana and her Created forces shortly thereafter. Halo 3 campaign co-op characters N’tho ‘Sraom and Usze ‘Taham aided Arbiter in this conflict. Arbiter was last seen in the book Halo: Outcasts shortly before the events of Halo Infinite where he and Spartan Olympia Vale attempted to find a way to defeat the Guardians on Netherop while fighting against Banished forces.

Another Elite whose story fans have long requested to see again in Halo games is the white-armored Shipmaster Rtas ‘Vadum. A loyal follower of Arbiter, ‘Vadum helped establish the Swords of Sanghelios after Halo 3 and was later tasked with hunting down the remaining San’Shyuum Prophets and Covenant remnants scattered about the galaxy aboard his flagship, the Shadow of Intent. These missions have largely kept ‘Vadum beyond the core worlds and absent from the Banished and Created conflicts. However, ‘Vadum is expected to return to the spotlight, alongside the Banished leaders Atriox and Escharum, in the upcoming novel Halo: Empty Throne, set in 2559 and 2560, around the time period of Infinite.

Atriox’s Incomplete Story and Goals

The Banished leader, Atriox, is another character who still needs to have his story completed. Atriox, after somehow surviving his fight with Master Chief aboard the exploding UNSC Infinity in Infinite, is last seen awakening the Endless deep within Zeta Halo at the end of the game. Many questions surrounding Atriox are left unresolved at the end of Infinite, such as how Atriox survived, why he hid his survival from the rest of the Banished, what he wants from the Endless, and more. Presumably, Atriox will play a greater role in Halo 7 as the Banished are still a threat on Zeta Halo, and he will probably use the Endless in some way to aid in destroying his enemies.

Halo’s Incomplete Human Character Storylines

One human character who still needs their story fulfilled is Doctor Catherine Halsey, the creator of the Spartan-2 program as well as Cortana and The Weapon. After being rescued from ‘Mdama by Fireteam Osiris, Halsey aided in combating Cortana on Sanghelios and later boarded the UNSC Infinity to help finish the fight. It was here that Halsey presumably helped develop the Mjolnir Gen 3 power armor later used by the Master Chief and other Spartan-4s in Infinite. Her current whereabouts are unknown, though she is expected to live to 2589 based on her closing monologue at the end of Halo: Reach.

Master Chief returned alone in Infinite, which left many players wondering what happened to the rest of Blue Team. In Halo 5: Guardians, Chief’s childhood squadmates Fred-104, Kelly-087, and Linda-058 were first introduced as playable co-op partners beyond their appearances in Halo novels. Blue Team was last seen in Halo: Bad Blood, being rescued by the Infinity from Sanghelios. Since then, info on Blue Team’s current status has seldom appeared. The exception is a brief mention of Blue Team in an Infinite UNSC audio log wherein Captain Lasky tells Halsey that the rest of Blue Team has been reassigned on an unknown mission.

The Whereabouts of Fireteam Osiris

Halo 5: Guardians additionally introduced players to a brand new squad of Spartan-4s known as Fireteam Osiris. Composed of Agent Jameson Locke, Olympia Vale, Holly Tanaka, and Edward Buck, Osiris was tasked with eliminating ‘Mdama, tracking down Blue Team, and stopping Cortana, though they ultimately failed in stopping the A.I. After Guardians, Osiris split up to tackle their own personal missions with Vale assisting Arbiter, Buck reforming his ODST squad Alpha-Nine in Halo: Bad Blood, and Locke was sent to complete the relatively unknown Operation: BREAKER TRIP. In Infinite, a UNSC audio log showed that Halsey briefly considered Locke to deploy The Weapon if Chief was unavailable. Locke and Tanaka’s current whereabouts in the Halo universe are unknown.
