The Veilguard References The Warden From Origins

The Veilguard References The Warden From Origins

Key Takeaways

  • Dragon Age: The Veilguard doesn’t carry over decisions from Origins, making most references to the Warden impossible.
  • However, BioWare has still snuck in a reference to our first player character, and one that doesn’t get in the way of our different world states.
  • Fittingly, this reference can be found in Weisshaupt.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is the first sequel in the series not to carry over all of our characters from the previous games or most of their decisions. The only one who makes the cut is our Inquisitor, who we recreate in The Veilguard’s character creator, as well as input three of the decisions they made in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

While this rules out cameos and most references to the Hero of Ferelden and Hawke – protagonists of Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 respectively – BioWare has still managed to sneak one in for the Warden. Better yet, it works regardless of who they were or what happened to them, so it shouldn’t feel like your canon is being overwritten.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard Has A Dragon Age: Origins Easter Egg Tucked Away In Weisshaupt

A text box in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, describing an item the player has found. The item is a Joining chalice, and the description says that it was "recovered from Osragar, Ferelden".

As spotted by our Editor-in-Chief Stacey Henley, you can find a Joining chalice in Weisshaupt. If you interact with it, you find out that it was “recovered from Ostagar, Ferelden”, making it the exact same chalice which the Hero of Ferelden used to become a Grey Warden.

Here’s a reminder of how that moment plays out in Origins. Well, it’s how it played out in my latest playthrough because I modded it to hell and back and it completely messed up the animations. But normally, your character would actually drink from it properly.

We’ll have to see if any more references like this have been snuck in, but we shouldn’t expect many. With The Veilguard not asking us for details about our Wardens, BioWare is limited in what it can say about them without potentially going against what we did in our playthroughs. It’s also been said previously that BioWare isn’t interested in creating a canon world state, so it seems that the team wants to let us reasonably imagine that our playthroughs still happened, even if we won’t see references to them in The Veilguard.

Dragon Age: The Veilguard is out today. It’s available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
