Kitten Space Agency is a new Kerbal Space Program rival from the creator of DayZ
Let’s get this out of the way: Kitten Space Agency is not Kerbal Space Program. Nevertheless, its creator, DayZ’s Dean Hall, is already calling it a “KSP killer.” KSP fans have been desperate for something to come along and succeed where Kerbal Space Program 2 failed, and it looks like KSA might just have the right space juice to get the job done.
There are a couple of fascinating things already known about Kitten Space Agency, at least in terms of its development. The first is that this space game was almost Kerbal Space Program 2. According to Hall it was one of the pitches presented to KSP2 publisher Private Division, and it made it to the last three before being knocked out.
“Our studio actually was in the bidding to make KSP2 and we made it to the top three bids,” Hall writes. “I put a lot of work into a good design document and opted to keep the focus entirely on this design and the technical aspects of the project – this was a serious problem for two of the people on the call who said we were the only pitch that did not contain art. Obviously our studio wasn’t chosen.”
The second intriguing thing about KSA is the legacy it promises to bring to the space inhabited by Kerbal Space Program. The team at RocketWerkz is made up of people who worked on Icarus and Stationeers, but many of the staff were also part of the original KSP team. In addition, Hall has a track record of creating mods for the game, so we’re looking at a development studio that’s been heavily invested in KSP-style games for a long time already.
In terms of the game itself there isn’t much to show just yet, but Hall has gone into some details over on Reddit to show off the kind of technical expectations players will encounter. These range from creating a seamless universe that won’t stop to load in new terrain or planets, to the ability for modders to tweak all sorts of data, such as messing with our solar system.
There’s no launch date for Kitten Space Agency yet but Hall is looking to get fans playing in some form during 2025. If you’d like to keep up to date with all the development news, head over to the KSA Discord for more details.
